Research Level, Pure Mode
Our demo recorded on the “Research” level this time includes indoor actions only. Action in a cavern is an example of other indoor scenes in the game: plethora of light sources, per-pixel lighting and multi-pass rendering amid rather complex geometry.
The “Research” is probably among the toughest levels for modern VPUs: pretty serious geometry load is combined with numerous light sources. As a result, graphics cards with relatively slow math1 performance – e.g. GeForce FX – drop speed to very low levels. By contrast, RADEON 9800-series plays pretty well in 1280x1024.
In general, performance of the GeForce 6800 and the RADEON X800 families of graphics processors is astonishing and in case of comparable products is pretty close. Still, in some cases RADEON X800’s minimal fps is lower compared to that of competing products. While there are few places in the demo when minimal fps drops significantly, there may be cases when NVIDIA’s GeForce 6800-series will provide more comfortable game-play even with a bit lower average fps score.
