Testing Participants Technical Specifications

Before we move over to performance of above discussed professional graphics accelerators, let’s sum up their technical specifications. It will help us interpret the obtained performance numbers better:

Testbed and Methods

We tested professional graphics cards on a workstation built around the today’s fastest quad-core processor – Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition working at 3.33 GHz frequency. Also this workstation used a mainboard on Intel X58 Express and 6 GB of high-speed DDR3 SDRAM.

So, here is the list of hardware and software components used during this test session:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-975 XE (Bloomfield, 3.33 GHz, 6.4 GHz QPI, 4 x 256 KB L2, 8 MB L3);
  • Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 (LGA1366, Intel X58 Express);
  • Memory: Mushkin 998679 6GB XP3-12800 (3 x 2 GB, DDR3-1600 SDRAM, 8-8-8-24).
  • Graphics cards:
    • ATI FrirePro V8700;
    • ATI FrireGL V7700;
    • ATI FrirePro V5700;
    • ATI FrirePro V3750;
    • ATI FrirePro V3700;
    • NVIDIA Quadro FX 5800;
    • NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800;
    • NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800;
    • NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800;
    • NVIDIA Quadro FX 580;
    • NVIDIA Quadro FX 380.
  • HDD: Western Digital Raptor WD1500AHFD;
  • PSU: SilverStone SST-ST85ZF (850 W);
  • OS: Microsoft Windows Vista x64 SP2;
  • Drivers:
    • Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility 9.1.0.1007;
    • ATI FirePro Catalyst 8.603 Driver;
    • NVIDIA Quadro Driver Release 185.85;
    • NVIDIA 3ds Max Performance Driver 11.00.08;
    • NVIDIA AutoCAD Performance Driver 17.2.0.

The graphics cards were tested in professional applications in 1920x1200 resolution with disabled Vsync unless stated otherwise.
