The 500GB model from the Barracuda 7200.9 series employs four rather than three platters because it does not utilize perpendicular recording technology. It is codenamed Tonka 4D and has a data density of 133GB per platter, not impressive by today’s standards. Seagate NL.2 500GB (ST3500641NS)
