The CF card isn't only used to store pictures. Everyday photo-tasks may also include browsing amongst the dozens of pictures on the card... In this case, a fast CF will be a great help !

I applaud the work the author has done but at least in the United States he has missed evaluating the two most prevelant types of Compact Flash Cards, Sandisk Ultra II and Lexar (who makes cards in your choice of speeds from 4x to 12x, 40x and 80x). As can be seen from his own tests he realy needs to try multiple sizes in each type of Compact Flash card and, in fact, the current test would benefit from his testing additional size samples of some of Brands/Models tested.

Given the appearance of this test in print I believe he should have no problem obtaining additional samples to test, and I, for one, would thank him greatly for having done so. It would greatly help everyone to have a definitive pair of articles done on this subject.

I liked this review, but I had one problem with it, the most interesting comment you had on the beginning of this article was the fact that some "professional" cards were made superior to others and altho more expensive also had better warranties. I just wish that after making this statement you would have included this data in your report on these cards. As you said Warranty's on an item this expensive is very important.

Neither of those so called "professional" cameras are professional cameras in my book. Both Canon and Olympus have very slow CF interface hence no significant benefit gained from faster cards. Why not to use faster cameras like Canon 1D Mark II, Canon 20D, Nikon D70, Nikon D2H.

Recent SanDisk CF cards support DMA transfers when used in IDE mode. (SDCFB-xxx-201-xx cards for example). I wonder if that might have to do with the odd read and access times of the cards tested? I also wonder if anyone else supports DMA? I first came across that here:

Thanks for the tests.
