Saying X800 is future proof is definetly out of track. I would say X800 is a curse for SM3.0 cards: it's so fast and cheap eveyone wants it but it misses several things needed for next-gen graphics. As a result, a lot of X800s are being installed, and this is badly influencing the installed base. To a certain degree, ATi made it so good it mined its own more advanced offerings.
Parallax Occlusion Mapping for example, does have excessive rendering costs on SM2.b, as well as soft shadows because of the static branching - at least mention that.
It should be mentioned that HDR effects seems to be proportionally faster on NV than on the competitor's offerings. I didn't find anything speaking about HDR but tonemapping can easily take 3-4 render passes on FP16 rendertargets... FP performance really mean something here, although I often see this bandwidth limited.
