1. Your results are much lower than everyone elses for the 6800 cards.

You did something wrong. You probably left trinlinear optimizations off.
[Posted by: Carfax | Date: 11/18/04]
We enabled trilinear and anisotropic optimisations for NVIDIA GeForce hardware.

We've not seen any benchmarks done using demos from X-bit labs over the web and even do not expect this to happen, as we keep demos in the lab.
[Posted by: Anton | Date: 11/18/04]

2. There's def something wrong with the nvidia results here - I know for a fact that they don't perform that low!

Sounds pretty ATI-biased if you ask me...
[Posted by: Simon | Date: 11/18/04]
Different demos perfrom differently.
[Posted by: Anton | Date: 11/18/04]
They didn’t use overclocked nvidia cards like the others web sites did.

If the DEMOS of Ati are ATI biased, why aren’t the DEMOS of Hardocp nvidia biased, anandtech, .....

Is to difficult to say….

[Posted by: I | Date: 11/19/04]
The overclocked cards were from factory overclocks. Those OCs dont improve performance by more than 2-4 FPS.

The demos from HardOCP involved entire stages and were 10-20 minutes long. They were even available for download. I dont know about AnandTech's, though.

3. I'd really love to see a couple benchmarks with older/slower CPUs.
[Posted by: Matt | Date: 11/18/04]

4. Quote Page 6 :The RADEON X800 XT cannot run this game at a comfortable speed even in the lowest resolution.

Error?
[Posted by: Nobody | Date: 11/18/04]
It's a typo from the author...judging from the graph, I think it's supposed to be "Radeon X600"
[Posted by: WebSurfer | Date: 11/18/04]

5. And it would be nice if we could see how last generation cards handle the game... e.g. (5200, 5600, 9200, 9600) Try it on medium settings for an example, you don't need 'pure' mode (highest settings) to make it playable.
[Posted by: Nobody | Date: 11/18/04]
yea, i dont understand why radeons 9000-9800 was not tested.... Are they just 8.1 too?
[Posted by: jena | Date: 11/22/04]

6. Bias. What is ATI paying you guys?
[Posted by: User | Date: 11/18/04]
The same nvidia pay to the others.
[Posted by: I | Date: 11/19/04]

7. You idiots claiming bias do notice that there are no standard demos out there and the results you see on sites will vary since everyone is doing something different.
[Posted by: james33 | Date: 11/18/04]
Its super correct.
Its very easy to do a DEMO that favors ATI or NVIDIA.
[Posted by: I | Date: 11/19/04]

8. I would like to see the results on a newer set of drivers namely Forceware 67.02. This driver is known to be so far the driver to use when playing HL2.
[Posted by: coldpower27 | Date: 11/18/04]
Please read our article more carefully.

"We also wanted to check out the influence of NVIDIA’s new driver (ForceWare 67.02) on the performance, but found that the difference between the new version and ForceWare 66.93 was no more than 1-2fps in the three scenes we used in our tests. Considering that the absolute fps rates are about 60-100fps, this difference fits into the measurement error range."

9. They probably used ATi's demos instead of making their own.

Shame.
[Posted by: colinisation | Date: 11/18/04]
Right on
[Posted by: User | Date: 11/20/04]

10. I love XbitLabs, but your results match with DriverHeaven - ATI won every single benchmark with NVIDIA staying behind. How can all your demos perform so differently that they don't match with AnandTech, HardOCP, and Firing Squad's results?

Are you use you correctly measured the performance?
[Posted by: taco | Date: 11/18/04]
ati comes out on top in anand's, firingsquad, etc. Only review ive seen that had them relatively even was Hardocp which is known for crap reviews.
[Posted by: Sped | Date: 11/18/04]
Hardocp used overclocked nvidia cards. And have the shame to say it was the stock clock.
[Posted by: I | Date: 11/19/04]
I: You do realize that BFG's Overclocked cards doesn't have much impact on the performance - around 2-4 FPS. Why in the world are you keeping pushing on this fact?

To others: Are you telling me that AnandTech, Firing Squad, and HardOCP are all ATI biased while Xbit is the only honest publication here. Yeah, right! Sure, I believe that.
[Posted by: taco | Date: 11/20/04]

11. Another very useful review guys! At least most of the entire range of of both major IHVs cards were tested esp Ati's X800XT PE vs X800XT & X700 vs 6600GT. Perhaps you should've kept 67.02 drivers although your reasons are clear.

For all you incredulous naysayers... Note that Xbit did not use overlcocked Nvidia cards, & correctly enabled the option for HQ watershader features for all cards. Not only that, they also correctly identified CPU limited benches, where all IHV's products tested similarly. Have a look at other sites & note which ones are promoting a close bunching of results & then concluding that Nvidia's products are as fast as Ati's in HL2. Well chosen demos, indeed... ;) The driver/IQ comments are also very useful, esp where one IHV has an issue with fog... ;) Compare Firingsquad vs HOCP, heh...

The thing to note is the great performance of the A64 system...
[Posted by: kazaalite | Date: 11/18/04]
Exactly. Hardocp used an overclocked nvidia card, and didnt enable the high quality water shaders. You could chalk that up to being in bed with Nvidia, but in Kyle's case it is more likely a case of continued incompetance. The man is a buffoon.
[Posted by: Sped | Date: 11/18/04]
100% agree with you!!!
[Posted by: I | Date: 11/19/04]
You want a good review go to anandtech period
[Posted by: User12343453 | Date: 11/20/04]

12. Noob question. How do you activate HQ watershader features? And since quality is an issue, could you maybe post some pictures regarding the 'quality' of the images? Like comparing HQ watershader and non HQ watershader.
[Posted by: dxreaper | Date: 11/19/04]

13. I'd like to know why the NV cards performs so much worse than in other benchmarks.
Anandtech's version showed the 6800 GT beating the X800 Pro, and I wouldn't call them incompetent.
I'm not interested in defending either side, I just want to know how such different results were achieved. They can't both be right... :D
[Posted by: Spoonbender | Date: 11/19/04]

14. what codepath does 6800 use by default? dx8.1 or dx9.0? looking here i'd surely say dx9.0, but when looking at PCperspective, i'd say dx8.1. Did xbitlabs force dx9.0 on 6800?
[Posted by: dsdsdk | Date: 11/19/04]
GeForce 6800 runs in DirectX 9.0 mode.
We did not have to force that.
[Posted by: Anton | Date: 11/25/04]

15. "Hardocp used an overclocked nvidia card" !
[Posted by: dsdsdk | Date: 11/19/04]

16. !
[Posted by: dsdsdk | Date: 11/19/04]

17. what the? it wont post the rest? trying again: i like this comment! so let me get this, it is not fair using an nvUltra OC card, but fair to use ATI's OC edition called PE? XT is 500/500 right? XTPE is 520/560 or am i wrong..
[Posted by: dsdsdk | Date: 11/19/04]
There's one big difference... The XT PE's is clocked at 520/560 according to ATI's specifications. According to nVidia a 6800 ultra is clocked at 400/550, so how can you justify that HardOCP choose to use a non-standard 6800 ultra?
One more thing.... They choose to bench an entire level. Why on earth did they do that? Any hardware reviewer knows that if you review a grahipcs card you have to choose a graphical intensive test, otherwise there wont be much difference....
[Posted by: Kiwi | Date: 11/19/04]
Thats right, it seams like now all nvidia cards are BFG cards.....
[Posted by: I | Date: 11/19/04]
[H] noted LONG ago they were out to seek real world performance. Benching an entire level removes a) card bias and b) represents real world more than the 2 minutes you're out in the open space, fighting a dozen things at once, and with ten light sources.
[Posted by: colinisation | Date: 11/19/04]
If they are out to seek real world perfomance, why dont they turn on "reflect all" and 6xAA on the ATI card? It would still run extremely well and playable and look better than nVidia.... If you are a noob HardOCP's benchmark might be ok, but hardware entusiasts are exactly looking for the hardest scenes because that represents what the graphics card can do and not what the system can do.
And how does a CPU limited benchmark make a review unbiased?
[Posted by: Kiwi | Date: 11/20/04]

18. I say that you've made the test in a way that it didn't compromise the news you've posted the other day. The news had the exact scores ATI gave. I don't think you did right.
[Posted by: noblody | Date: 11/19/04]
News-stories do not affect reviews in any way. We began to develop demos for the review hours before the news-story was posted.
[Posted by: Anton | Date: 11/25/04]

19. As always a good indepth review, thank you :-)
Did you use the "reflect all" setting? How much does this setting slow down the 6800 as opposed to "reflect world"?
[Posted by: Kiwi | Date: 11/19/04]
Thanks for the kind words :)
I believe the "reflect all" affects only levels with loads of water. Please see the update: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/half-life_6.html
[Posted by: Anton | Date: 11/25/04]

20. OK, pretty interesting review. I'll note just the following points :
- how much do the "ReflectAll" impact performance on both card versus "ReflectWorld" ?
- where are you demo from ? ATI ? NV ? Vendor independent ? or did you dreate your own ?
- how are the demo balanced between "shader intensive" and "real gameplay" ?

AWx
[Posted by: Awax | Date: 11/19/04]
1. It impacts much only on the levels with water or liquids. In case you have a powerful graphics cards, you are going to be able to play with "reflect all" setting for sure.

2. Please read our article: We used five demos for the final version of the article. "The demo sequences were recorded on Canals 09, Town 01, D3 C17 12, D2 coast 05 and D3 C17 02 maps of the game. ATI Technologies offered us demos made by ATI’s technical specialists, but we decided to use our own sequences for testing, except the Town 01 sequence, which had been made most professionally. We only renamed the Town 01 demo file to avoid any accusations that ATI used any unfair optimizations for the particular demo."

3. The demos are balanced in a way to showcase real gameplay performance in shader intensive scenes.
