2.
I have one DiamondMax Plus - 40GB, and it works well. I was monitoring SMART data, also touching HDD with my fingers, then I measured the temperature with an digital instrument. Yes, it was close to critical: Maxtor says for this type 5 to 60°C.
It was in the summer time, in hot enviroment. So I tried with passive Cu heat sink made from two big plates on both side, and the result was poor.
Only air stream produced with a 60mm fan powered with half voltage (in order to reduce the noise) made the temperature to drop down -about 15 degrees, nice!
Few minutes ago I talk with my dealer, and he says: there was no problem with this type of HDD. I'd belive him, I worked for the same company, and some bad series from various manufacturers we know well.
For now, this Maxtor's HDD are working fine in normal conditions (no mechanical or electrical shocks).
