1. It is impossible to get excited about S3 or XGI 3d hardware because the hardware is only half the equation. They need good drivers to interface their hardware to the 3d applications and their drivers have *sucked* for the last few years. While ATI and nVidia could run Doom3 from the start and later released drivers to improve the performance XGI and S3 could not run the game for months. Doom3 was one of the top 10 games of 2004, not an obscure title. Until they get their more engineers working on their drivers their only customers will be those who don't need 3d.

2. S3 Graphics stopped developing all their drivers a couple of years ago, the drivers were buggy. Lots of people got mad and some internal conflicts only made things worse.
They really need to get their drivers up and running for real and not dump drivers just because they suck at writing them. VIA Technololgies should be blamed too, as they controlled S3 Graphics carelessly. They are both welcome to compete, but we don't want crappy hardware like the S3 Savage series or outdated drivers.
