I own a DRU 500A i would like to add that sony have been nice enough too relese a firmware update that upgrades the DVD+R write speed to 4X and we are currently up to 2.0f which is a dream of a firmware upgrade - and it's all free.

Isn't this really a re-branded NEC ND-1300?

I have the DRX-500UL model of this drive ( external USB2/IEEE1394) and I can tell you it totally kicks major butt!

sir i have purchased sony combo drive in march 2005 while it was manufactured in sep 2004 afterseptember 2005 my drive is not writing the cd it give messege there is no space in your cd while i have replace many cds and its driving dvd video and sofare cds please give me its solution my email address is below

I have used a Sony DRU-500A for about three years. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Today it will not recognize new Memmorex 4x DVD+R media. Also I cannot view DVD's that I have created on it previously.
I cannot view Commercial DVD's.
