1. Are you sure SSE3 where enabled?
Is there by any chance that the bios didnt enable them or even the aplication not using them because of wrong processor detection?
[Posted by: kaz | Date: 04/04/05]
I sm absolutely sure that SSE3 was enabled :) All diagnostic utilities and tests supporting them indicated their presence. Moreover, you can see that the results of the SuperPi test after we ran the patch were much better than before we ran the patch.

2. I think you could have done more tests, you talk about the 4 bank compatibility but didnt test it, or even made some benchs with the 4 banks with the new core vs the old one.

3. I was expecting lower power consuming than the older core, little disapointing since there is some good 8W difference. I wonder if Turion could go better with the Winchester core instead of the Venice.
[Posted by: kaz | Date: 04/04/05]
Don't forget that power consumption can vary from die to die. And Turion uses special transistor level and microarchitectural tweaks to lower performance vs. Winchester & Co. See the Hotchips 16 presentation from AMD about the changes.

4. Is the any chance in doing the test with a Via KT800Pro and/or a ULi 1689 (ASROCK 939A8X-M) since i think are the best chipset you can buy right now (budget).
nforce4 is too $$$ even if it is the best PCIe chipset for AMD, i still want to stick with my 9700 card.

6. Thanks for the in-depth look at these new chips...been waiting for awhile now for them to finally hit.

Speaking of which - has anyone actually seen anywhere with them available for order/pre-order yet?
[Posted by: fsdgsfdgfsdgsfdg | Date: 04/04/05]
I can't find these chips anywhere either. The only 90nm Athlon64 chips on Newegg are the Winchester cores. Were they really released on 4-3-2005?

7. Nice review, Ilya!

One question about DFI NF4, though... What BIOS have you used for Ocing tests? Also, you say you had issue with it running memory at 1T... Was it, that DFI did not run @ 1T at all or just in certain memory configuration that Venice was supposed to handle, like 2x256MB DDR400 1T? And once again, what BIOS was used at that time?

Thank you,
[Posted by: bachus_anonym | Date: 04/04/05]
I meant, 4x256MB :)
[Posted by: bachus_anonym | Date: 04/04/05]
I used the latest BIOS dating back to March 10 called NF4LD310. The problem with 1T and Venice looked as follows. When I installed two memory modules 512MB each (I tried a few different pairs of DIMMs from OCZ and Corsair) and set the timing to 1T, the system based on Venice CPU didn't work correctly. However, when I replaced the Venice based CPU with the one on Winchester or Newcastle, everything returned to normal.

Frankly speaking, I found a partial solution to this problem. If the DIMM modules are moved to slots 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4, everything works fine with 1T setting, even though the mainboard display a warning message about the necessity to reinstall the memory modules into other slots. In this case, however, the mainboard’s overclocking potential gets significantly lower.

So, we should wait for the new BIOS from DFI.

8. What's the die size?
[Posted by: Mike | Date: 04/04/05]
There are 68.5 million transistors, and the die size is 83sq.mm. In other words, Venice core is of the same size as Winchester core.

9. On page 3 it says:
"Besides wider compatibility of the Venice’s memory controller, it also got noticeably faster. Among the tweaks implemented in Venice we should definitely point out enhanced hardware data prefetch and more write combining buffers (4 instead of 2).

All these improvements should help Venice based Athlon 64 processor to outperform their counterparts based on the older core revisions but working at the same clock frequency. And the performance gain will be more noticeable if there are four memory modules installed in the system."

Can you test this out? I would really like to see if there are any performance increases from using 4 single-sided DIMMS with the Venice core.

Also, besides being able to use 1T with 4 RAM slots installed, can they still work at the 2-2-2-5 settings? And can they be overclock beyond 200mhz?

Thanks

11. this is sweet. another bang for the buck processor from AMD.

12. I'd like to know whether the Venice can work at lower voltage than the Winchester core, and whether the energy consumption at lowest possible voltage is lower than the consumption of the Winchester core.

Is it possible to supplement the review with some undervolting tests?

14. I have a question, i tougth the DFI lan party could only use DDR 3200 at 400mhz, just like it says in the specs,

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-136-152&depa=0

...I even asked in another forum and they told me that DDR 500mhz would not run on Athlon64 boards...

CAn the atlhon boards use DDR RAM beyhond 400mhz? It's the overclocking that enables their use?
[Posted by: lusonico | Date: 04/08/05]

15. DDR400/PC3200 is only the "default" setting on AMD 64 motherboards. DFI (and most other motherboards) will happily run a FSB much much higher than that as long as you adjust the BIOS settings correctly and have memory capable of the speeds - as a matter of fact OCZ just announced a new DFI specific line of ram designed specifically to run at DDR625 - the people on whatever forum you asked on were terribly terribly uninformed.
[Posted by: dean123 | Date: 04/08/05]
Thanks dean123, i'm happy to know that, that means i can either overclock my DDR 3200 memory or just buy higher frequencies. I've read that by going for higher frequencies latency times increase a bit, does it pays off to overclock just mildly?
