Once again, you don't seem to get it - this MT version of LAME is buggy and is not supported by developers! It's independent version that won't make it into official source code. And one detail - one month ago, the latest version was 3.97 alpha 10. What you use is incompatible modification based on early alpha version! I don't really see the point why you test with it when it has absolutely no value for end users.

Get real!

20% overclocking without a sweat and you're not impresed?!?

You may want to check Tech Report:

"With very little effort and even less drama, I was able to get the X2 3800+ running stable at 2.4GHz...
Now, that's a sweet overclock all by itself...
This is the sort of overclock I could live with for everyday use..."

You write:
"Athlon 64 X2 3800+ appeared a faster processor than its competitor from Intel, the Pentium D 830"

Tech Report:

"And the X2 3800+ outperforms the Pentium D 840 more often than not..."

"The choice is clear, the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ is better in every way than the Pentium D 830....

Not only are there significant advantages in single threaded games but everything from encoding to the multitasking tests put the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ ahead of its Pentium D counterpart...."

Anandtech has quite a different opinion!

Yeah, 800 MHz free is good, I don’t see why is little.

Of course, if the higher end parts giving 2.7Ghz you want more....

"In case of lower power consumption, Athlon 64 X2 3800+ drops its working frequency to 1GHz and core voltage to 1.1V. As a result the power consumption drops down to 5.8W in idle mode, which makes Athlon 64 X2 3800+ a very economical solution. "

Are you saying that the processor only does 5.8W when not “working”?

It was nice to see power dissipation idle with all the others processors (Intel included).

If the voltage of this new processor is lower than the others, should you put it at the same level of the others (1.4v) in order to see if achieved higher?

Nice article, but "Although this can hardly upset the happy Athlon 64 X2 3800+ owners, as their solution costs twice as little as Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and Athlon 64 FX-57."?

Twice as little? Normal English is "half as much".

Comprehensive and great review as always. However, I would have liked to have seen a A64 3200+ (2.0ghz) single core in the benchmarks; I know this sort of things may have been done for 4800+ etc, but it would be nice to see it here so then you can compare:
>single vs dual core with both CPUs at the same speed (2.0ghz);
>singe vs dual core CPU with same PR rating (3800+ - 2x2ghz vs 1x2.4ghz)

which would have IMHO, with only one extra CPU type, made for an even better review.

I have issues with the language: X2/3800 posts 148 sec , the PentiumD830 posts 152 (32 bit).

Yet the reviewer can state "Athlon 64 X2 3800+ appears the fastest here leaving all the CPUs from the same price group far behind, even the Pentium D 830".

What kind of BS is that? They're within 2.7 % of each other!

How can you say AMD lowered the price bar for dual core systems? This processor is $180 more than the Intel dual-core entry. Apparently, the Intel platforms are easier to acquire, as their systems are all I see for sale from the major mainstream vendors...

Terrible review of a dual core...Do you go out of your way to find only the single threaded apps to use??? I mean duh we woul know where the 2.0ghz 3800+ X2 falls from past reviews but you LAME it up with use of virtualdub (not multithreaded), and just about every multimedia app that isn't multithreaded....

I mean have you heard of the very popular TMPGenc??? or perhaps the very popular AutoGK for Divx and XVid?? NO??? I guess these are not very good programs.....

Absolutely lame review as about the last 3 to 4 of them....Never seems to match other review sites, also as a norm lately....

Big thumbs down to the site...

I liked your article about the X2 3800+. These cpus should be great at doing two things. Why is no one benching them doing two things at the same time? I was wondering, with being dual core how about benchmarking the duals with one program like a game, while running superPI.

There is any way that some day we will see a X2 3800 on a laptop?.

We can buy an Athlon 4000 at HP, and they have almost the same thermal requierements (A little higher on the x2 3800).

Any news about this?

I have overclocked my X2 3800 to 2600mhz with aircooling(zahlman) without any problems.
