Great summary of graphics cards. It's nice to see how they compare to each other.
Can someone explain why the 6800 Ultra has a roughly 30 % performance lead in some of the Far Cry benchmarks?

I'd assume the only difference is the slightly higher clock speeds, but the performance increase is larger than the clock increase.

Why do you keep testing with uncomparable Settings? Did'nt you guys notice the discussions about shimmering on NV40/G70 cards?

As we said, we select the highest graphics quality settings in each game, the same for graphics cards from ATI and NVIDIA. Furthermore, we use different quality settings compared to other web-sites. Moreover, we have compared quality of both ATI- and NVIDIA-based graphics cards and generally we consider the quality comparable.

There are some scenes in Quake III Arena, where you definitely see a big difference between Q+OPts, Q and HQ. Even at quality settings without optimizations shimmering is more noticable than on Ati with driver default settings (p.e. q3dm15 or q3dm17).

With your positive texture LOD setting for ATi cards you won't see any texture shimmering @ all. Here is the link to a Farcry savegame, showing a high frequency shader whoch wonderful points out the different driver quality settings: http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2ASBNF7KJCUAV2F81GW6OGOWUI

It is not exact the same problem. If you know Zeckensacks Moiré Monster, you also know, that there are textures which are shimmering all the time, even with perfect NV25 AF. There are videos on 3DCenter which show, without a doubt, that ATi AI is comparable with NV40 HQ.

NVs 78.03 fixed shimmering issues on G70. G70 HQ is now shimmering as much as NV40 HQ. And if you test my Farcry savegame you will see, that NV40/G70 HQ is shimmering, Q ist flickering and Q+Opts is ugly enough to suffer from eyecancer...

Very good and informative article.
You might want to correct error in Performance-Mainstream conclusion (page 44), where GeForce 6800 (and not GeForce 6600) should be compared with two other cards.

seem kind of odd that a 7800 gt performs like a 6800 vanilla at 10 X 7 then gains 30 fps when going up to 12 x 10 in the BF2 benchmarks

i've found out that this test used Nvidia chipset based motherboard, ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe, which i've believed giving an advantages to the Nvidia GPU in term of compatibily & performances than ATI GPU. I think, except for SLI configuration, a single GPU test should use Intel based motherboard so it could give fair result between Nvidia & ATI RADEON.
