1. Nice, but those OPNs are wrong. "DIO" doesn't suggest a variable Vcore. And Sempron have TDP rating of 59W, not 62W. Othewise it should be OK, just I have no info about 3400+ s939 model so I cann't confirm if it is right.
BTW, DH8-D0 core was used for Semprons s939 as well - on model 3200+. This one doesn't have AMD64 enabled, however. [Posted by: Eagle | Date: 10/12/05]
I forgot... will you also test those 90nm Athlons 64 for socket 754 ? They are now shipping on DH8-E6 core as models 3000+ and 3200+.

2. Whats the difference between E3 core stepping and E6?
[Posted by: Kaz | Date: 10/13/05]
Revision E3 is stepping 0, revision E6 is stepping 2. Besides this change it has three bugs fixed.

4. At the bottom of page 8:
"It is also the amount of cache memory rather than the memory bandwidth that determines the speed of the system in popular games. The more progressive Sempron 3000+ enjoys an advantage of 5-7% over its Socket 754 analog." I thought that both Semprons have 128kb L2 cache. What did I miss? [Posted by: dprozzo | Date: 10/13/05]
5. About the M2 socket ...
I am considering buying a new PC in the next several months. I am thinking about moving to s939 AMD64 with the long-term vision to have a PC, which will keep an upgradeable profile for a long time. So if M2 is about to be released and the s939 goes out of the game, is it preferable to wait some time until M2 comes out? I need a "buy-and-forget" PC that will “last” for a long time with no need to be upgraded rather than having some workstation for professional CPU-time-consuming processes. So what should I do – buy new 939 or wait until M2 ? And will Intel’s 775 be changed soon? [Posted by: knob | Date: 10/13/05]
Seems to me that the M2 is going to be very expensive comparied to 939 when it comes out. So cost might be an issue worth looking at. Dont think they are going to have an M2 below $500 for a long time maybe not till around 1Q 2007. Just my opinion pulled out my azz.

Intel's LGA775 will be changed when they come out with the dual core Pentium M for the desktop. It does not use the NetBurst FSB technology, so Intel will be all new in early 2006. AMD's Socket M2 is barely close enough to begin to talk about. I'd just get a fast Athlon 64 or a A64 X2 and be happy with it - rather than wait and have something be delayed, or scarce, or have to worry every day about news on Socket M2, etc. I'm a professional early adopter, and it can get a little old...

8. Its about time. I build alot of computers and have always gone with the Athlon 3000+ Venice, but now i will have another option. Not so great for games but the people i build for dont play games so its perfect.

It's hardly "bad" for games, just not that great compared to A64...especially when you look at the Celeron's performance.

16. Fantastic... Pair one of these with an ATi RS482 chipset with IGP and you've got yourself the new king of the value market. Kudos AMD, and nice job on the review as usual X-bit ;)

That is exactly what I just bought a Compaq SR1710NX: Sempron 3400+, Socket 939 (so I can put in an X2), ATI RS482, x200IGP. Plus an open PCIe slot. All for about $430 CDN.Until I read this article, I didn't realize my Sempron 3400+ was dual-channel. Now I just need to upgrade the RAM and get another 5-7% boost in speed.
