Most of the performance difference for USB can easily be shown to
be from using the NEC controller -- old, slow.

I've used the SAME DRIVE on Linux (2.5.73) and saw read speed
for USB 2.0 at the same level you showed for FireWire. That was
on both NForce2 and VIA (VT8235) motherboard chipsets.

The main difference in speed is not the Mbps of the bus but the combination of driver, bus spec and implementation.
USB2.0 = 480Mbps, 60MBps theoretical bandwidth but the proces of communication, BUS allocation, bus overhead, driver etc. limits performance potential of all USB2.0 devices.
FireWire 400 = 400Mbps, 50MBps theoretical bandwidth, less then USB2.0 but typically performs considerably better than USB2.0 during the listed benchmarking tests.
For a high performance External drive, I'd look for a FireWire800 drive.
But I guess the best part about these external drives is not about speed but for backup & archive of non-performance critical or non-frequently used data.

What is the deal with using a P3 600? Holy cow talk about your last century hardware. You'd almost certainly have gotten better results with a USB2.0 controller thats built into the NFORCE2 or the ICH5. And what do you have against WinXP?

Sorry, this is off topic. Just wondering, is there any bootable firewire/USB 2.0 combo controller? I'm looking for upgrade but I've never found them. I heard I must purchase new motherboard integrated firewire/USB 2.0 to boot from them, but I wish I could upgrade. Thanks.
