What about the Universal 106 Pioneer or the LiteOn solutions?
This review would've been better if it were 2-4 months ago; *then* it'd be relevant.
...who the h3ll would buy an outdated Pioneer?!?!

...another poor setting for a review, xbit! Keep up the mediocre work.

like bhame said.. some write up ... uses out dated drives, which is a way is a good for those that can't afford the newest drives and they can see how the older ones stack up, but like i said.. they missed the new TDK dual and the plextor +r/w

2 drives i'm currently looking at ...

Another worthless review. Is benchmarks all anybody cares about? When it gets down to making DVD's, compatibility and write quality should be number one. I'd rather have it take a little longer and do it right. But, maybe I'm just in the minority.

This test is really bad,

Pioneer 105/A05/105BK and the Teac are all the same, the Mitsumi and the NEC too.

What a sucky test... Compairing different versions of THE SAME TOASTERS!!! Why do you people say NEC is not popular? It's damn popular overhere. 50% of our 10thousands of forum guests have NEC's... this test sucks

For the love of all things good and true in the world release the second part of the test where you review drives of the same type (DVD +/-) from Sonys competitors. From the numbers the Sony drives looks bad, but somehow ends up as the winner? Where are the +/- capable drives from Plextor, Pioneer, TDK, LiteOn?

There are some factual errors in the description of the Sony drives. The U10 and the U12 drives are identical. The differences are that the U12 is used in Sony PC's, and the U10 is sold as an OEM product. They both have the same specs as the DRU-500A drive. NOT the same as the DRU-510A. The U14 drive is the OEM of the DRU-510A.

The 500A (and the U10 and the U12 that are it's OEM's) doesn't support 4X +RW. The 510A (and its OEM, U14) does. I don't beleive there is firmware to enable 4X +RW support for the 500A, but I'm not sure. Check here:
