Damn thats alot of money for a game. How am I going to tell my girlfriend about this one? Playstation has gone a bit too far.The game should come with about five games and a free year of internet. And it also should come voice activated for that much money. I wonder can you play your I pod on it. For $600 I should be able to do almost anything.

I'll contend to it being the most expensive console ever. The NeoGeo was $750 some when it came out. And if you want to talk in relative terms, either the Neo Geo or the Atari 2600 is the most expensive console today.

But otherwise, people need to realize that video game consoles are expensive toys. Like a sports car is to... whomever.

Your right...NeoGeo was expensive as hell. The cartridges for the system costed $200 each. Nobody, not even the silly media is speaking on that though. Lets not forget the Panasonic 3DO when it came out...it launched at $800. The Media is so full of it its unreal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3DO_Interactive_Multiplayer says $700 here...good luck at finding it for that price at launch. I did wait till it dropped to $400 before buying one. Awesome system at the time though. Just like the PS3 when its finished. Whenever that might be. LoL

Hell I'm shocked to learn that the Atari 2600 costed $199 when it launched in 1977!! Thats like a $1000 US dollars today (plus or minus a few hundred). To see Nintendo still coming out with a system that cost $199 30 yrs later is amazing...

Atari was a much better machine than anything Sony can come out with, vis-a-vis what was out.

There was essentially no competition, and the volumes were much lower. I remember being a kid and getting one of those for Christmas. It was the best gift I could imagine, and I loved that silly machine. The games were fun, everything was new, and you could spend hours on it. It was either that or play Pong, so it was worth $200.

By the same token, look at the price of computers back then. Normalized with inflation, they were WAY more expensive than now. That's all these toy machines are, computers, so that shouldn't be suprising.

Considering the cost of the Atari 2600 against computers from that time, it was quite cheap. The same can not be said about the PS3, which costs roughly the same. So in absolute terms, yes, the 2600 was expensive, but in relative terms to what else was out there, it was a bargain and was worth it, in my opnion. Is the Sony? It wouldn't be for me, I'd buy the Nintendo. A lot of people will buy the XBox. They are much stronger competition than Pong.

To expensive and after what problems the ps2 had, id hate for my $600 dollar Ps3 crash the day after the warranty has expired like alot of the Ps2's did.

Blu-ray playback on both versions will make the PS3 stand out from the other same caliber machine.
As noted aboce, the PS3 will not be the world's most expensive console.
The manufacturing cost of 900 was a small slip up by Merryll-Lynch. Everyone still uses it though. The real estimate was 800.

...And change your girlfriend if she doesn't agree on bying a PS3. My former girlfriend agreed to buy all kinds of neat electronics, so she's my wife now. =)
What's this "going too far" You get wifi, blu-ray, hdd, online, bluetooth and you still want more? The price is right. Wait if you can't buy it at launch. Someone else could you it, because there will be shortages.
