Oh, SUPER! Wow, I've literally waited years for this (see: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1027632791), so I can't wait to see your results, Oleg. Really, lag on any device sucks, and the more we are going towards digital (dsp audio amplifiers and lcd screens vs. analog amplifiers and crts), the more latency becomes and issue.
For example, I had a Samsung HT-DB600 home theater receiver decode and amplify dolby digital live signals (from my soundstorm), and it had lag!! 120 ms to be exact, I measured it by recording a headphone (analog out) and the home theater receiver (ddl over toslink) together. E.g. when you adjust the windows volume slider, you can clearly hear that "bing" in the analog speaker is way earlier than the "bing" from the home theater amplifier, it sounds more like bing-bing. Then I upgraded to another newer home theater receiver, the JVC RX-D301, and did the same experiment. Now the sonds are almost simultaneous! Conclusion: Different home theater receivers can have very different latency when decoding digital signals!
So I very much look forwards to seeing your latency measurements in the future LCD reviews. In my opinion, a CRT might provide a good reference. Even better, maybe you could measure the total latency from mouse input to screen display, but that depends on additional factors such as the mouse, drivers, the PC, etc. Still, apparently the latency in the LCD is way larger than the latencies in all other components.
Really, great idea!
