1. Does anyomne have information on AMDs plan to invest in FAB Unit in india together with a special purpose company called Semindia?

There were consistant reports till a few months back of AMD's possible involvement with the proposed $3Billion Fabcity Project in India. www.exclventures.com

2. The US$3Billion Investment in Fab Facility in India has been delayed due to lack of proper industry frame-work. The promoters have demanded several fiscal concessions.

3. THE Indian government on Feb 22nd announced the long-awaited semiconductor policy. Till now, India has been designing chips, in over 100 chip design units, for the world — for products like iPods, set-top boxes, LCD TVs and cellphones — while countries like China, Taiwan and Singapore manufactured the India-designed chips. The new policy promises sops for companies to set up fab units (jargon for chip manufacturing plants) in India. Whether global semiconductor giants will actually set up fab units in India remains to be seen.

India is the fastest-growing market for electronic products with the use of electronic goods expected to grow to $363 billion by 2015 from $28 billion in 2005. India is expected to account for 11% of the global electronics market by 2015, compared to 1.8% in 2005. And, these digital products will consume semiconductors to the tune of $36 billion by 2015, says the Indian Semiconductor Association. This may make a compelling case for companies like Intel, AMD, Infineon, Toshiba, IBM, SemIndia and others to establish manufacturing units and avail the 20% subsidy for semiconductor plants in SEZs and 25% for those located outside SEZs, as per the policy announced on Thursday.

The incentives will be in the form of tax concessions, interest subsidy and interestfree loans for subsidising the capital expenditure incurred in setting up the manufacturing units for the first 10 years of its existence. Thus, a unit set up in 2010 (the policy is valid till then) would receive subsidies up to 2020.

4. The 3.5Billion Semiconductor Manufacturing Facility (Fabcity) promoted by SemIndia at Hyderabad is in the process of taking off to the construction stage, consequent to arrangement with Stuttgart based M+W Zander for design of ATMP facility.This would open up renewed investment interest in the vicinity of the Fabcity according to Exclusive Ventures.

M+W Zander head quartered in Stuttgart, will design and build the ATMP plant of Fabcity promoted by SemIndia, Hyderabad. Zander has built Semiconductor Foundries for AMD, CSM, Siemens and Siltronic. Its a world leader in aspects of high-tech construction and production focused on clean room technology for the electronic, solar, pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnological and food-processing industries.

Recently, the Govt. of India had notified an investor friendly Semiconductor Policy which provides for with fiscal and operational incentives for setting up chip manufacturing units in India. Several Foundries are expected to be set up in India with combined investment of $12 to 15 Billion. Since the incentives will be provided only to the first 2 or 3 Companies, promoters are working hard to put financial structure in place. SemIndia's Fabcity with land allocation on Srisailam Highway near the New International Airport at Hyderabad is the clear front runner. Fabcity also has also received SEZ (Special Economic Zone) Status for the core area of 120 Hectares. SemIndia has technology tie up with AMD. It has roped in IMEC, Belgium as R&D partner.

Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (HSMC) has roped in Infineon Technologies, Germany as its technology partner for the proposed $4Billion Foundry. Its in the process of finalizing location for the Project.
