1. Great article. But looking at nvidia's soundstorm page here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/motherboards.html ... they imply that the Asus A7N8X Deluxe is not "SoundStorm certified." Actually, it looks like almost none of the MCP-T motherboards are certified. So how would I know if a given board with an MCP-T (say, the Asus in the article) will really support all of the features mentioned in the article? [Posted by: woo49 | Date: 08/28/03]
2. why are you testing via vinyl on a board with the 8235 southbridge??? its the new 8237 (not present on the board you tested) that has via vinyl built in and when used with the vt1616 codec you get the full benefit. the new kt600 soltek board would have been a much better (and probably much more accurate) board to test

3. It doesn't matter if the 8235 or 8237 southbridge was used, the VIA southbridges still sucks because it doesn't have a DSP inside it like the MCP-T. CPU has to do the work for almost all other onboard sound implementations, while the APU in the MCP-T relieves the CPU from doing the audio processing.

4. why wouldnt it matter? if the 8237 has via vinyl built into the southbridge and the 8235 doesnt then it seems like the 8237 should be the one used in this comparison

5. woo49, in order to be Soundstorm certified, the motherboard has to come with the spdif connectors.

6. and the A7N8X does not use the MCP-T (which the Deluxe version has)

7. edplayer: OK, I can believe that the SPDIF connector is required for certification, but I was referring specifically to the Asus motherboard used in this article. From the article (page 9):
> Two mainboard are going to participate in today’s testing: Soltek KT400A and ASUS A7N8X. The first mainboard features a VIA VT8235 South Bridge and an AC’97 VIA VT1616 codec. The second one is based on the nForce2 MCP-T with the integrated APU SoundStorm and an AC’97 Realtek ALC650 codec. -- So, the unit being tested has to be a A7N8X Deluxe, because they're testing the MCP-T, according to this quote. And Sergey says it's a SoundStorm board, while Nvidia's webpage says it isn't. I guess my question really is, do all MCP-T motherboards give you all of the SoundStorm features, e.g., the Dolby encoder, even if they're not "certified?" [Posted by: woo49 | Date: 08/29/03]
"do all MCP-T motherboards give you all of the SoundStorm features, e.g., the Dolby encoder, even if they're not "certified?"that is exactly what i would like to know :) [Posted by: blitzy | Date: 12/02/03]
8. Nice article. Additonal tests regading the ADI 1980 and 1985 (SoundMax) chip would be welcome.
