I have been thinking of building a new high spec computer using the ASUS Striker Extreme for a while now, but these negative reviews have put me off. Would anyone recommend a less buggy alternative?

IMHO, the Asus Striker Extreme is not all that bad. It is probably overpriced as compared to the EVGA 680i board and may have some issues but i not uncertain if it deserves all that much negativity.

Are you all using the latest BIOS from Asus?
use the 1305 for Quad and 1301 for Duo Core CPUs.

My own experience with this mobo, especially overclocking (it was actually pretty painless) here:

This motherboard is an absolute peice of shit!!! It does not even work AT ALL in my computer and u are better off giving your 300 dolars to a bum on the street! Why do I make such an outlandish proposition you ask? Well, lets see Heres a list of the problems I have had with this board: 1) The board does not properly match up with the case. 2) The board does not even start and my screen remains blank with only 3 cyptic error messages that are as follows; 3) CPU Init. Error. 4) Det DRAM Error. 4) VGA BIOS Error.
Buying this monitor was the worst decision of my life. You would be much better giving the 300 dolars to a hobo in the street than to asus who will give you a motherboard that does not work. Any advice would be helpful. Sincerly, Unsatisfied Asus Costomer

Well for me the greatest drawback of ASUS Striker Extreme is that it doesn't support Intel 45nm quad CPUs :(

Yeah it was priced high at the begining, now from 250/300 ballpark, still a kick A$$ board. Yeah its picky on the memory, and if you dont know how to overclock, then yeah, your going to complane like 80% above comments.

Its a great board, as long as you know what your doing. And now that Asus and Dfi have beta bios there working on for the new intel chips, i dont half to go get the new bling bling boards yet, I can wait till the 790's are out and ddr3 ram drops in prices. Thanks asus for not copping every one else on board designs.

Hello guys !

I've just bought my Striker Extreme. I'm really disappointed ! I've a good system setup with a Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4, 8gb RAM, 2x Nvidia 8800 GT, etc. At first, everything looked to be working fine, I've installed Vista Ultimate 64 that I were alredy using previously with no problems. But, when I decided to upgrade the BIOS to the lastest release the problems began. The network adapters simply stopped getting the IP address from my home router (linksys) no matter what I tried it didn't work, and believe me, I've a large experience with this kind of issue, I tried everything ! Then I decided to downgrade the BIOS.. another challenge !! Asus update does not allow certain downgrades as the EZ Flash from setup. The solution? Flash the BIOS from an old DOS disk... I'm really considering to buy a new MOBO, now a DF.. I do not trust in Striker Extreme anymore.

Another interesting fact - Asus' own Artic Cooler doesn't fit in the space provided within the cooling piping. The only way to make it work was to position it so that the "exhaust" was blowing up, instead of out, or to bend a few of the heatsink flanges on the Artic - surprisingly poor engineering flaw - go with Zalman products all the time.

waiting on my 6th Motherboard now from cyberpower first 2 cmos burnt out 3&4 blue screed if you blinked in their direction on a daily basis I'm guessing 2-5x a day for each till replaced 5th I get this
ERROR0x800745dI/O Device DVD rom and burner both lock up windows explorer if you put dvd data disk in and won,t clear till you eject then windows explorer re set's
lucky for me all have been covered by warranty but that's about up
I have
E6850 3.0 GHZ
striker extreme
2GB corsair value-ya- I know go figure but it work's at least for a while
8800GTS 320mb superclocked
1100watt Tagan
150gb raptor at10,000rpm
500gbWestern Digitalat 7,200 rpm
stacker 830 case
picked striker for all the reason you should pick a board and it run's well when it run's!!!!!! bought system 8/19/2007 as I said 5th ones' on it's way now[6th counting 1 that came in it] and while it does perform well at default setting's[ for about 2month's at a time] it won't run long enough so as I would trust overclocking it.......or maybe that what it needs like a race car maybe you gotta run it a little hot for it to run well just a thought but it does post some low [less than nominal]voltages in Vcore, mem and one other that Idon't remember right now and it has been same on all 5 so far
and as far as bios all have been 1305
but five in 10 month's is just well just F***ed for lack of a better word but at least all have posted out of the box be only for 2 month's
damm I just want to play Oblivion,C.O.D.4,Assissins Creed, Crysis or any of the other games I have but don't want to start and get half way to have it crap out...we all know how that suck's

i got this motherboard as well and it has allways been an pain to me

i cant even overclock my Q6600 any more as it results in Very hard Lock after desktop load whats very anoying, i had that chip running at 3.4ghz for 1-2 months then the pc started to hang droped it back an little untill it would not even go beyond default speed, it may be i over did the motherboard but CPU temps was below 60c chipset was actively cooled as well, i see what happens when i put this QX6850 in nice to have known about that 420mhz speed drop guess i can just set the ram to linked and see how far i go

found it hard at the time to find What setting i need to set to overclock on this motherboard, most likey broke somthing i guess (hopefuly its just the cpu)

i should of got an intel chip set any way as i do not use SLI
