Does the FANBOYISM ever stop???

I mean come on, the friggin board doesn't even have standard industry com ports so it's worthless to 98% of the market. The price is outrageous not because "it should be" or "because so much work went into it", it's over-priced because braindead FANBOYS who spend more of Mommy's money than they have brains, go out and buy these POS mobos.

I'll bet a $1000 cold cash that there are a ton of defects in this mobo that show in the next 90 days and that Asus will NOT fix the problems or recall the mobos and replace them with properly functioning mobos that meet all industry standards and preform as advertised.

Giving an Editor's Choice Award to such crap is Precisely why Asus and other Asian mobo companies continue to ship garbage products. Xbit's Lab loses ALL credibility when you hype such a defective product as an Asus or similar mobo.

I can't understand why so many wows to a mobo that is three times more expensive than any other full-featured i965 in the market.

It's okay it's got plenty of bios features, but it's just that, bios features. I believe any bios could do nearly the same if programmed/modded properly.

I won't pay 250-299$ more for a mobo just because its layout is "cleaner".

Not my cup of tea, and a very undeserved "Editor's Choice"

If only this main board is cheaper, I’ll definitely get this commando.

I might be blind, but I didn't see much else than overclocking pointed out, and there this motherboard didn't achieve as high FSB as the Gigabyte S3 that costs half as much... and then it's given a "best P965" motherboard award?

I dunno, it just doesn't seem any better than P5B Deluxe, and costs $40 more.

hello,

excellent article.

FSB limits are typically products of their respective CPU, not their mobo.

When you have a decent board, like commando or p5b dlx typically the CPU is going to hit that FSB wall, not the mobo.

Also, check the TIM on the southbridge and northbridge. Typically, they dont seem to make good contact, which can also be a FSB limiter.

Also, with high vcore load, such as putting a quad-core processor in, many commandos seem to buzz from the coils.

Either way, it is a nice board, just not earth shattering. P5B dlx is just as good of a board, just without the voltages.

Apart from a few added features this board is still not really any better than the P5B Dlx that is now selling for less

Giving "Editor's Choice" award to a less performer mobo shouldn't be so cheap.

X-Bit Labs is no more the reference guide to give my friends.

My commando gets up to 535 with 1.55v on northbridge, I assume that i amlimited by the cpu. it´s 24/7 stable with 520 fsb...

Excellent analysis and review. Thanks.

We have some legacy addicts around here, don't we? And some CHEAP sumbiches, too.

Tweaktown gives the mb a 9 out of 10.
HEXUS gives it the 'Extreme Speed gong for offering an excellent layout, BIOS and overclocking potential'.
Hardware Zone gives it the 'most overclockable product' award.
Tbreak recommends the mb.
You get the idea.
Everybody loves this board except for a few miscreants who can't buy it for $49 or who want to plug their 14.4 baud RS-232 modem into a serial port.

no com ports... eh. what can't be done with USB anymore? I run a printer 2 pocket pc's a router and a digital camera, I havent used a com or lpt port in years. I haven't used a floppy drive in years either.

no eSATA?

COM and LPT ports.. nah thats not a drawback, we are finally getting rid of old legacy ports.

The drawback could be the 4 PCI slots.. why 4 ?? Preferably there would be at most 2.. and the rest PCI-E slots.. I would only need 1 port for the soundcard.. arn't we changing this standard to PCI-E ?

Then no Firewire 800 ports.. these are the things i would consider drawbacks.

It seems a bit strange that your major criticism of the Striker Extreme was its high price, an equally multi-featured, high-performance board, yet here you are saying the Commando is completely worth it for its equally high price! The Striker has suffered from an outdated BIOS on early production boards, causing problems with newer components like recent graphics cards, but nothing that can't be solved.

So it would be courteous to say that the Striker Extreme is equally worth its high price, even if you may run into what could be considered normal computer-building teething problems.

Sheesh.

eeeeh to whomever wrote this thing. One of the pics you used is of the striker extreme, NOT the commando. You can clearly see the esata on the backpanel. The commando does not have that, the striker extreme does.
