I've noticed a number of comments on the web stating that recent Intel CPU batches seem to have been binned - max CPU clocks while overclocking are dropping... You used to be able to buy an e6400 and hit 3.2 GHz without breaking a sweat - now it seems like it's becoming more and more difficult to break 3.0 with a brand new CPU. That said, how do you think this might impact the overclocking assessment?

Good article, BTW, I'm shopping right now for a new CPU / system...

Excellent article, and the chart showing price to performance is most helpful.

One question I have, and was not addressed in this article, is in relation to choice of chipset, relative to upgrading your CPU down the line with future price drops.

It would seem to me to be pointless to even consider 939 or am2, since the AMD64 line seems to have a limited life compared to the Intel 775.

Does it make sense to buy into decent price Intel C2D knowing that you'll be able to drop in a faster one down the line and give you more longevity?

I do agree with one of the comments about liking to see VMWare in comparison testing. As a gamer and programmer, I do have to run other virtual systems.

Thanks

Very imformative. Good to see that its quite a clear cut upgrade for me to go Intel.

This article leaves out something very important, and it is unforgivable considering this is all about budget dual-core systems.

Let me see if I can spell it out for ya like I was talking to a 4 year old:

Go to newegg, and click on the little tab that says "motherboards"

You got that? m-o-t-h-e-r-b-o-a-r-d-s

Now click on the AMD-compatible tab. You with me so far? lol

Now click on the $50-$75 bracket. Notice there are eight (8) socket AM2 motherboards with at least 40 reviews and a 4 star rating.

Now do the same for intel. I-n-t-el. lol

Notice there are ZERO (0) Core2-compatible motherboards under $75 that have at least 40 reviews and a 4 star rating.

I am just curious, how much different does the pricing on motherboards have to be before you jackasses will consider it a relevant factor in articles like these?

Very timely and concisely presented. But, plenty of detail as well. I got a rather complete picture of current CPU performance and value. Just what I was looking for. Thanks.

Great indepth comparison, would have been ever more comprehensive if the actual power consumption (taken from AC power meter) is included for both standard clock and overclocked test!

Very comprehensive and objective article. I like that you seemed to consider everything about each family of chip - including overclocking ability. The price-to-performance chart was over and above. More important to me than the fastest chip is what bang-for-the-buck I'm going to get. Well done! This review made me bookmark your homepage!
