Great test but..

What OS was used? XP sp2, vista ult.?
Vista is the new shit shipped with most new pc's.

Isn't it time to start to show what super performance it will give you in your brand new expensive pc?
Or why we all want to upgrade...

Any ideas why 7950GT 256MB has faster framerates than the 320MB 8800GTS in a lot of benchmarks according to your website? (Surely, the 7950GT 256MB has less memory and is about half the GPU speed so it should be much slower. But in games like FEAR Extraction point, the 7950GT is much faster in all resolutions. why is this the case? I highly doubt most games would be so memory dependant that it impacts the 320MB 8800GTS so much. (While the 256MB 7950GT isn't impacted in most games compared to the 512Mb version)

Please check this thread also for some more details. =)

Thank you for indicating min FPS wherever applicable. It's amazing how much 'more of the story' that tells - and equally as-amazing how infrequently review sites take the extra bit of effort.

Thanks a lot, this article has determined that i dont have to waste almost £100 for an extra 320mb of ram, as at my native resolution of 1280*1024 it has only a 5% - 20% difference. My money is going on a factory overclocked 8800gts 320mb.

Question:

I own a Gainward Bliss GF8800GTS "Golden Sample". Its clock specs is 550/1760/1350 MHz by default.

I am NOT using the "Expert-Tool" but RivaTuner 2.01 instead and I have strange readings there:

If I overclock to 621 core clk, the shader domain shows up with 1350 MHz. Memory runs as specified in RT. If I clock my card 550, shader domain gets 1200 instead of 1350.

Is this phenomenon due to wrong readings or did I do sth. wrong?

Hexus has found that the 158.19 (and most likely newer) drivers makes a huge difference to the performance on the 320MB 8800GTS cards. Seems they have made much needed memory management optimisations.

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=8824&page=7

As you guys and many other sites have noticed, even games which don't require more than 256MB of video memory are heavily impacted on the 8800GTS 320MB and makes it 2-5 times slower than the 640MB version.

I was wondering if xbitlabs is willing to retest and update this comparision with newer drivers?

An important factor to me is how does the viideo card fit into the motherboard. Does it take up more than one slot? This applies to every video card involving PCIe.
