1. If the DIR-655 is like some of the other D-Link products, it will fail in short order in addition to not actually delivering the claimed performance and features. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see D-Link get sued again by the Federal Trade Comm. for unscrupulous business practices.

2. I have owned a DIR-655 for several months now after upgrading from a DGL-4300 and have found it to be a great product. As noted by Tim Higgins
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30087/96/ both routers are based on Ubicom technology and I haven't had an issue with them "failing in short order" or "not delivering the claimed performance" The overall performance is best in class and I never worry about it crashing. I found that this is a router that works very well out of the box. I haven't needed to go in and configure the firewall or QoS to make any of my online applications work. I definitely have no regrets about buying it. As for the price, my broadband connection costs more than this each year so why bother with cheaper boxes that almost work? 3. It would be nice to se Linksys WRVS4400N pitched against this D-link router. I am pretty sure Linksys would come out on top. The question is if the extra money really is worth it. I would be more interested in WAN port performance than WLAN performance though. And is there any difference in the VPN performance and features?

4. Excellent Review. Very Helpful.
However i felt the range of the router is underlooked. Thank You. [Posted by: Kalyan | Date: 07/28/07]
5. I have found that the device remains cool when kept vertical. The venting allows for the warm air to escape. As stated in the article, I understand the issue about cables potentially getting in the way of the antenna but I figured out that I could just route them the other way to get around the issue. I would have liked to see more of a test in temperatures based on the orientation of the unit since heat was mentioned within the article. Other than that, excellent router with excellent performance and range. the only issue I had in connecting was not releasing my IP prior to disconnecting my old router. My provider provides one dynamic IP and assigns it to the MAC address of the requesting device. Attempts to acquire an additional IP, even if the old router isn't running subsequently fail until the IP expires or you release it. This may not be an issue for you but if you find that the router can't acquire an IP from your provider try reconnecting the old router, going into the administor console into the dynamic allocation area and hitting the release button.

6. I had one of these and I was very pleased with its performance until after about 2 months use it started rebooting itself almost continuously. I had not even logged into it for at least 2 weeks prior to this happening. I left it disconnected from power for several hours and tried again and it continued the rebooting it had done before even though it was not in any way hot. I had bought it at PCWorld in the Uk and was able to exchange though.
I got a RangeMax and I am regretting it. Nowhere near the performance or range of the DLink. Seriously considering another DIR-655 (maybe mounting this one vertically as mentioned here) There was one thing that frustrated me about the support. DLink have a firmware version of 1.04 and 1.05 over in the USA, which are not available to European users (stuck on 1.03). The newer versions fix one of the most blindingly stupid designs I have seen in any router: it uses a WHITELIST (where you specify which websites to ALLOW) instead of a blacklist. There is an easy way around this however, use opendns. [Posted by: Meh | Date: 11/20/07]
