I am waiting to see the pro level 2xxx series of chips. From what I have seen of the lower end, it's easily comparable, and in a lot of cases faster. I haven't seen anything on the ultra or high end (r600 based) but, one things these chips do not lack in is computational power. The first thing that struck me, when most saw disappointing game scores with the card, is the sheer power in pro Apps. I think this is where an r600 chip (if your gonna make just one for multiple sectors) starts to make sense. Tesla sure isn't faster then the AMD solution, and I don't think their pro cards will be either.
I bet it'll be a twofer, as AMD and Nvidia compete on 3 fronts, not just gaming cards. If they win high end professional, (gain market share) and slow market acceptance of Tesla, then I am sure they are ok with ceding fastest single (perhaps multiple) card GAMING solution.
Time'll tell :)
