1. I'd buy a nvidia 9800 only for its name ...
[Posted by: MiKeLezZ | Date: 01/04/08]
LoL, yeah, weird isn't it !
nVIDIA really hit gold with their G80 design, it's architecture is insanely effective, can't wait to know the specs. of that 9800 GTX assuming that it'll be based on the same design with some tweaks here and there, they can really do almost WHATEVER they want with such a design being so well balanced and tweakable and scales very well with every added block, it can serve them for at least 3 more generations as long as heat issues are dealt with -remember NV30 lasted for 3 generations and it wasn't as much balanced as this one-.
I admit nVIDIA is my 1st PC related company favorite, but we need ATI to be good as well for the better of all of us, so their R700 needs to be some heck of an advance over their R6xx design.
nVIDIA is on fire lately and I predict that 9800 GT will be even hotter than the already hot 8800 GT 512, we'll see about that in due time !

2. So, which is the least expensive??? :)
[Posted by: James | Date: 01/04/08]
LOL, yeah, noticed that too...the least of the least of course :)

3. This sounds bad! Then again ATI could pull out the drivers and make the 9800 look bad!
[Posted by: Dragonsprayer | Date: 01/04/08]
This sounds bad??? A scent of fanboyism in the air???
[Posted by: eltoro | Date: 01/04/08]

4. I didn't think they would go with 9xxx names since ATi is the first one to use 9xxx in its graphic lineup.
Good job to nVidia though

5. Was I right or what?
Based on the same architecture and in soso performance increase were the words I howled upon thou deaf ears but no one heed my words of wisdom.
At least AMD has a good chance of remaining competitive this time around.

Mr. BonBon, I haven't forgotten lol... I never said you were wrong, nor do I recall many others saying you were blatantly wrong, rather I said it was very unlikely NV would want to let ATI catch up like this, thus they would more likely to release a monster card then a kitty cat.

NV had an entire year to develop a tech that was far beyond the G80 in power.
NV had incredible sales ensuring they had no limits in research funds.
NV was rumored all year to be working on the next big thing (9800gtx)

Instead we get what you said... New cards that are barely better then what is already available, and the worst cards possible when it comes to the most bang for the buck. I was hoping you were dead wrong, but now that you were correct in your previous assumptions, it leaves all of us who were looking to build or upgrade in a tough spot... We will have to settle with playing Crysis at 30fps in med-high settings until the R700 or 10k NV series in a year or so=\
Or then again...... This article may be way off, and the 9800GTX might still turn out to be 2x the power of a 8800GTX w00t! =D (unlikely I know lol)

This ain't over till the fat lady sings (all the way to the bank apparently), but nobody should get their hopes up at this point...
[Posted by: gamebro | Date: 01/04/08]
Meh, its not that bad. We are getting a card that's 30% faster than the ultra in the ~$500 range. I see the 9xxx series as a 8xxx refresh rather than a new generation of cards. A simple naming scheme, like the 3870 which is basically a 2900XT.
Nvidia's only concern is to maintain the performance lead, and they can do so with little effort. On the other hand, they have ample time and resources to perfect their next generation architecture, while AMD has to struggle to rush their R700 out ASAP.
[Posted by: Mr. BonBon | Date: 01/05/08]
I truly belive that the 9800 series will in fact be 30% faster than the 8800Series,leaving ATI once again in the dust. I am currently running Tri - SLI with 3 / 8800Ultras in my main rig, and two 8800 512 GTS's in my 2nd rig. The GTS's will be for the 9800GX2 due to driver problems. [ what else is new lol ]
[Posted by: stan116 | Date: 02/29/08]

6. Disappointing IMO that the new cards are barely any better then what is already available =\ but yeah no surprise considering the situation.

1 big danger here for NV, is that the R680 runs on crossfire which scales MUCH better then SLI currently does... This means, don't be surprised if the R680 is just about as powerful as the 9800 GX2 in most games. In my opinion, NV is giving ATI too much slack here. If the R680 is much cheaper, yet performs nearly the same, this could really backfire on NV (which would be a good thing, as we need ATI\AMD to survive lol). Here is how multi GPU's work today---

8800GT beats 3870HD-- by a good bit
2x 8800GT looses to 2x 3870-- but it's close!
Again, due to how SLI and X-Fire scale, don't rule out the R680 yet people!

Sigh...... I guess I'll just have to pickup a 3870 or 8800GT until some real new tech comes along... The super high prices on these cards is not for me especially since they are only marginally better.

Also---The 9800GT? Do they mean perhaps the 9600GT which isn't looking too terribly hot, based on what is currently known, it sounds like it'll perform about the same as a 8800GT or less.
Why bother with a 9800GT?.... based on how the 9800GTX performs like a 8800Ultra, wouldn't that mean the 8800GT, which should be less powerful, would be well.... Darn near identical performance to the 8800GT? Fleecing the people, it has begun =-0

Then again..... All this information could be way off, and the 9800GTX might actually have 30% more power then a 8800ULTRA, and the GX2 might actually have 60% more power! However that is unlikely now.
[Posted by: gamebro | Date: 01/04/08]
wish there was a way to edit our own posts lol-

I meant to say---
Why bother with a 9800GT?.... based on how the 9800GTX performs like a 8800Ultra, wouldn't that mean the !!9800GT!!, which should be less powerful, would be well.... Darn near identical performance to the 8800GT?
[Posted by: gamebro | Date: 01/04/08]

7. And....The Price will high rocket not worth to buy just for playing crysis in decent fps...
[Posted by: Marvic | Date: 01/04/08]

8. If it plays crysis very well at max settings and other games that will be out in the future which would be on par with crysis later on. Then i'll just wait for the 10800GTX or whatever they call it to come out and get two of those. Just to be sure. along with a 8 or 16 core processor computer and 8 gigs of ram. when do you think directx 11 will be out?
[Posted by: firedog | Date: 01/04/08]

9. What is going on? Is 30% performance increase all we get in the next generation? This is ridiculous! At this rate it will take 2 more years to get a single GPU running Crysis smoothly at very high settings at 1920x1080.
[Posted by: Shaq | Date: 01/05/08]

10. NICE. So they are saying the 9800GTX will be slower than 2 G92 cards 9800GX2, that sucks.
[Posted by: nice | Date: 01/05/08]

11. The graphics cards from ATI have far better architectur then thus from nVIDIA but developers dosent take advantage from ATI's GPUs superiority. For exemple a 3850 can run crysis faster then an 8800GT if you change some things in the game files.
[Posted by: The gunner | Date: 01/05/08]
Show me any instant where a 3850 runs faster than a 8800GT in any game. Baboon.
[Posted by: Mr. BonBon | Date: 01/05/08]

12. Um, ATi Radeon 9800 anyone? Did nVIDIA do a brain fart and forget about previous naming conventions? GeForce 9800?

What's next? An ATi Radeon 5800? This version with a new and improved turbo blower fan?

These companies need to get a clue.
[Posted by: Jon | Date: 01/05/08]
how is naming conventions relevant.. they do follow their naming convention 7800, 8800 and you guessed it right 9800..

Its not like ATi 9800 is beeing made anymore so its irrelevant at this point.. but if you want to have a look at say Minolta digital cameras and then Canon digital cameras.. same names does happend from time to time when people are using numbers..

13. hohohohoho cant fuking wait 20k in 3DMark06 in a single card solution is drawing near
[Posted by: penguin1 | Date: 01/06/08]
Benchies will be interessting, lets hope 2x performance but im not that optimistic that it will be even 1.5x at this time.. but lets hope so..
[Posted by: Silver | Date: 01/06/08]

14. /me bets 9800GT2 is just 2*8800GTS 512mb underclocked to keep power usage down, and 9800GTX is just an 8800GTX @ 65nm with higher core clocks and faster memory.

Nothing interesting is going to happen till the second half of the year when the real next gen parts arrive.
[Posted by: Simon | Date: 01/07/08]

15. The 9800 GX2 might have 30% higher performance if a SLI profile is available but what is its preformance when it doesnt have that profile ?
[Posted by: LeadSled | Date: 01/19/08]

16. The 9800Gx2 specs dont look too hot to be honest. Considering that this card's power will depend on the drivers and the SLI optimizions in current game engines.

But I wouldnt say the card is crap yet, we dont know how the clocks are gonna be
Most of you would say its a down clocked 8800GTS considering theres 2 cards that create a lot of heat, but do not forget they are now produced in 65nm wich makes a BIG difference. (look at Intel and their Core 2, same story there)

So the clocks could be a lot higher than the 8800 Ultra actually. Also dont forget about the shader clock wich has even a bigger effect on the performance than the GPU clock! If they boost that thing up to 2000mhz (wich would be possible considering the 65nm shrink) you would get a hell of a perfromance there!

The only thing that bothers me is the memory. 256bit interface is a bit lame in my opinion, especialy if you keep in mind that 256bit interface has been used since GeForce 5! Make it 512bit already!
Its really time to upgrade to GDDR4 memory with 512bit!

17. Want something to boggle your minds. There is an end where you get to a point where you can only put some many processors together before you get a problem with heat. Heat is naturally everyones enemy and transfers into power consumption. One of these days probably before 2015 there is gonna be a point where you cant make the transistors any smaller and you cant put anymore transistors on top of each other. At this point you will probably render anything in the seconds range 3-5 secs. So there is an end of the road. At this point there will be no point in upgrading because why upgrade from 5 seconds of rendering to 3 seconds. Doesnt make sense. But wait a transistor now has a binary function of 0 or 1 and there are millions of them on a die. Now imagine if all those transistors had a binary of 1 or 16,423 that means 16,423 x 16,423 instructions per transistor. Holy shit batman we can now render everything and process everything in 1 sec.... wow... Lmao... its true Motorola has a processor that can do this right now that is the future. in about 7 years all this madness will be over.... upgrading and more upgrading.

18. Where di they come up with $849 for a 8800Ultra?? I run Tri-SLI with 3/8800Ultras,and only paid $619 each. Come on guys, double check your prices before going to print,!
