1. what about the power consumption?
[Posted by: jm | Date: 01/14/08]
Power consumption? Why, this is where all the defective C2 dies are.

2. You could have done an across-the-whole-range cache size comparison, with results for E2XXX and E4XXX processors also, but, apart from that, It really is a very useful article, and one we may not see in most other websites, which are much too centered around the ultra-high-end

thanks for paying attention to the lower parts of the market

+1

I'd also have liked to see comparisons of the E2XXX and E4XXX cpu's since the cost difference isn't all that much.

3. I was hoping for this to be better at gaming, might of picked up a couple for cheap lan boxes. But looks like E21xx is clearly the better choice.
[Posted by: seed | Date: 01/15/08]

4. So it seems that Intel remains king when it comes to value. Overclocking a E2xx chip by almost 100% is rather common these days.
[Posted by: Mr. BonBon | Date: 01/15/08]
Haaaaa Mr BondBond.
The review was Celeron E1200 but hey your fanboy eyes make you see other.

X2 4000+ fragged the celeron. AMD might bring high clocked single core semprons or dual core with 128KB/256KB L2 and will clean the house.
[Posted by: Joker | Date: 01/15/08]
Yes mop. You make sure you get one of those single core semprons with 128KB L2. Meanwhile I was reffering to the E2xx as the ultimate bargain, the celeron isn't quiet up for the task.
[Posted by: Mr. BonBon | Date: 01/15/08]
OK.
The E2xxx the ultimate bargain I'm not so sure about that.
The X2 4000 is very cheap and perform very well against it.
Both CPUs overclock very well with the RIGHT motherboard. Budget motherboards no...
I wonder who will buy $120 motherboards to pair with 60$ CPUs...
[Posted by: Joker | Date: 01/15/08]
You can find half decent Intel boards for less than $40. Thats cheaper than the cheapest AM2 board. Also both chips overclock very well, but E2xx @ 3.0 is > than X2 @ 3.0, cooler too. Sorry, but I just don't see any point going AMD, there's not even a decent upgrade path one can look forward to, unless you already have an AM2 board, you can upgrade to X2 6400+ or a Phenom.
[Posted by: Mr. BonBon | Date: 01/15/08]
yup! they're cheap and should be quite sufficient for most tasks.
[Posted by: BLEEP | Date: 01/15/08]
my AM2 board from ASUS costed around 30 $ and is still boasts better features than the mid-end 100$ boards from intel

5. How much power does this CPU consume compared to say E2160 of Athlon X2's?

If this CPU consumes even a few W's less than E2160, then it sounds perfect for a home server.
[Posted by: Lowpower | Date: 01/15/08]

6. Where are all AMD fanboys which were claiming that we will pay $1000 for a dual core CPU if Intel wins the CPU war??

Cheap dual core CPUs are here to stay....
[Posted by: notafanboy | Date: 01/15/08]
Intel hasn't won the CPU war just yet, but they are close, you fanboy.
And its too early for Intel to want to start taking advantage. Once AMD is reduced to competing with VIA S7, Intel would have no reason to drop its CPU prices.
[Posted by: Mr. BonBon | Date: 01/15/08]
Haaaa another fan boy...
Maybe you will, Intel fanboys are willing to pay anything for the lovely company, even if their future GPU will cost 2X more and perform 4X less than Nvidia offering they will all embrace any Intel product!

Or maybe Intel is releasing the dual core celerons because AMD X2 are so cheap that forced Intel to improve even further their own CPU line, where the Pentium E2xxx or Core 2 Duo E4xxx couldn’t compete with the X2 in price nor price/performance nor price/performance/power nor price/performance/power/platform nor price/performance/power/platform/IGP nor wait its better this way, couldn’t compete with the Allin1!

Joker you should hardly be throwing around the tag of fanboy when you are cheering on an inferior processor.

Why can't everyone one just live with whats the best and stop buying/supporting companies because they are a fan of said company. Right now Intel is at the top, so you should accept this fact instead of trying to defend your "lovely company".

If what you predict is true then you bet your ass I will be buying Nvidia (Nvidia will sell processors, or was that a typo?).
[Posted by: Blahh | Date: 01/15/08]
Doh you said GPU's...

K replace CPU and GPU toward the end there
[Posted by: Blahh | Date: 01/15/08]
fucking moron
[Posted by: AA359 | Date: 01/16/08]

7. Sorry, AMD only lowered prices of their X2 cpus when Intel Core2 beat them soundly.
[Posted by: SorryAMD | Date: 01/15/08]

8. Good review but power consumption missing.

And the same error than everywhere. You cannot make a conclusion about gaming using a nvida 880GTX at only 1024*768. You should use an slower card or higher resolution because nobody will use that card to play at 1024*768 and the benchmarks would change tremendously.
[Posted by: Sergioytc | Date: 01/15/08]
The game tests were performed under such circumstances so that the CPU would be the only bottleneck. Had they made the graphics card the bottleneck, all the systems would have given more or less the same result. Of course, when actually playing, a gamer would use different settings, but, like this, we found out what is the maximum we can get from a certain CPU. For example, you won't get more than 39fps average with E1200, no matter what graphics card or settings, but E2160 would give you up to 49, and with E6750 you could get up to 91fps average. That's why a powerful graphics card and low resolution were chosen for those tests.
[Posted by: Ivan | Date: 01/15/08]
The average framerates I was talking about were from UT3, sorry I forgot to write that.
[Posted by: Ivan | Date: 01/15/08]
But in real gameplay you would play, for example, at 35, 38 an 40 fps with each processor so the conclusion about gaming with this CPUs would change dramatically. What really matter would be the graphic card and would be better to spend the money in a faster GPU than CPU.

It is ok to see the CPU raw power, like a synthetic benchamark, but it is not usefull to draw a conclusion of this type.

9. Nice review but power consumption should have been mentioned.
[Posted by: !!! | Date: 01/15/08]

10. Nice job keeping the low-end at a low price point!

AMD Fanboys... altogether now... 1, 2, 3... cry!!!!!

priceless!!

altogether now.....1, 2, 3..........dork!

fuck all of you

you're a classic example of moronic AMD fanboys

11. I would like to see a (system) consumption comparison between a 945GM and/or G31 system with this celeron, the E2140 and E4200 and a low-power AMD system. I currently have an AMD x2 4000+ on a nforce 6100+MCP430 with only 1 laptop HDD (no optical drive) which consumes (according to my APC UPS) 56W in idle and 108W in full CPU load. I would love to replace it with a system with less consumption, but I don't have the money for research.
PS: I know about VIA systems and they are too underpowered for my needs. I'm running gentoo on it, so it needs "compilation power".
[Posted by: mathew7 | Date: 01/15/08]

12. I would like to see a power consumption test of this CPU
[Posted by: ale | Date: 01/16/08]

13. Doesn't make much sense to buy a CPU cooler that is almost as expensive as the CPU to be able to overclock it that high. A test with the stock cooler would be more interesting for those who are looking for super cheap PC.
[Posted by: dagas | Date: 01/16/08]

14. Also It would be interesting to compare the AMD64 X2 to Celly
at the same clock speed, to see if only the level 2 cache makes the difference in normal core 2 versus AMD64 x2 ?

But I guess brisbane is 2 X 512k and E1200 is 1 X 512 Kb or ??

[Posted by: Cpu_freak | Date: 01/16/08]

15. AMD needs a dual core Sempron class CPU, and they need it fast, because the Celly 1200 is clearly aimed at huge OEMs; it's actually nice to see that the Celeron is again a decent CPU, like the old 333 from the past.
But for my point of view, the price difference between the 1200 Celeron and the E21xx is not worth the trouble, just get a baby Conroe if you want a valuable CPU and you want to OC; but if you don't want to OC, the X2 line up to the 4800+ is a better choice... then again, there will be truck loads of dual core Celrons heading to the OEMs.
[Posted by: STB | Date: 01/17/08]

16. this E1200 may be the best choice for
24/7 SOHO opened web server. Very low
power consumption
[Posted by: newsun | Date: 01/18/08]

17. mengapa benckmark sangat tidak fair, amd tidak dikasih chipset terbaru 790 series, sedangkan celeran dikash x 38, bandingkan saja performa amd 4000 + lebih jelek dari review april war price amd vs intel
[Posted by: yadi | Date: 01/18/08]

18. It seems obvious to me that the new celeron is going to have to drop down to the $40/ sub $40 mark to be king.
[Posted by: Ptah | Date: 01/19/08]

19. I just purchased this Celeron Dual Core ( I was surprised to find one at my local Micro Center) It is an excellent little CPU and it runs ice cold. Perfect for my wife to use. Significant improvement over her old Socket 754 AMD Sempron 2800+.
I will probably not OC, It doesn't seem to need it.
