1. I tried to summarize the data from the table on the last page so I checked which card was better at the highest playable settings in each game.

The GeForce has won 6 games (BF 2142, CoD 4, HL2: E2, STALKER, TR: Legeng and Gothic 3), and Radeon was better in 4 (ET: QW, UT 3, TES IV, both indoor and outdoor, and C&C 3); Bioshock was a draw (equally playable at the highest resolution); of the games that were unplayable at all resolutions (at least the way they were tested, with everything maxed out and with AA and AF), 2 ran a little better on the 9600 (LP: EC and World in Conflict), two others were better on the 3870 (Call of Juarez and Crysis) and 2 more were equally bad (under highest possible settings) with both cards (Hellgate: London and CoH: OF); finally, the synthetics favoured the Radeon.

So it's pretty close, and it's down to which card is cheaper and more easily available where one lives, or which brand one preferres.

2. ATI HD3870 support DX10.1 so I think ATI more favour then 9600GT for now

3. HD3870 FTW!

4. Unless you have something against AA, try the XFX 9600GT. They are over at Newegg for 149usd with rebate. Skip the AMD garbage.
[Posted by: YurDad | Date: 03/08/08]
Hmm, AMD had messed up AA and AF performance big time with this series, but here we had the cards tested with AA wherever possible and AMD still managed to hold it's own. (Besides, these are sub $200 cards, so end users will soon find themselves using AA 4X a bit less often, and if it's more or less a draw with AA...)

Though I must say that $150 for 9600GT is a sweet deal. Still, one has to pay $180, and then wait for over 2 months (up to 3, if one is lazy) to get the $30 back: first you wait for the product, then you post the rebate form, and after they receive that, it's 8 weeks before you get your money back.

5. What a meaningless review. How many of the resolutions were playable? Why waste the time with a review when all cards are performing under 30 fps?
[Posted by: TheEmrys | Date: 03/08/08]
because it shows all of them relative to each other under highest settings so u kno wat to expect from a single card

6. How can anybody play games with average frame rate below 90 fps, when vsync is disabled? I play games with such settings, when graphics card can almost always render 60 fps, when vsync is enabled.

the human eye doesnt even see 90 fps anyway, and i bet ur monitor doesnt refresh that fast

7. Why is the GeForce 8800GS never included in these comparisons?
[Posted by: ZORAX | Date: 03/09/08]
It's probably because 8800GS is likely to be discontinued (if it's still in production anyway), being not that cheap to manufacture (since it's based on the G92 chip), and with it's performance comparable to that of 3850 256MB. There is a comparison of a factory overclocked 8800GS 384MB and a Radeon HD 3850 256MB here: http://driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=525&pageid=1
[Posted by: Ivan | Date: 03/09/08]
Well it's better than the 3850 256Mb. Unfortunately the XFX version doesn't overclock well because they use crappy memory, if you get the EVGA/Asus version most cards can overclock their memory to around 2GHz (1GHz DDR) which helps a lot since the memory bandwidth is pretty low for the 8800GS.

Unfortunately I have yet to see a review with a non-XFX overclocked benchmark for the 8800GS.

the 8800GS is a way more expensive card then those of similar performance these days
its like paying two grand for a real relic

8. Alexey Stepin or Yaroslav Lyssenko i don't know if you know about this issue: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/Shady_9600_GT/

But maybe you can check something for me. Can you run Clockgen and see what frequency the PCI-E port is running on the 680i when the 9600GT is plugged in?

9. There's a mistake in the article. In the Test Bed section >>> 8800 GT 512 MB has 112 SP, not 128 SP.

11. what drivers were you using, and how were you setting them to a constant 4* FSAA/ 16* aniso/ HDR, cause i bet not all the games supported it
also, were any cards overclocked and how were they cooled

13. I bought Gaiward GeForce 9600 GT GS week ago and it's really great card for gaming. I decided to buy it because my LCD has maximum resolution 1280x1024 and for this resolution this card is the best choise. I play Crysis at 1024x768 at high details and framerate is from 30 to 60 (sometimes it's less than 30 but not often and it's caused mainly by my little amount of RAM - only 1GB). Other games like BioShock, UTIII, Gears Of War, Lost Planet run perfectly at resolution 1280x1024 and maximum details. It cost me 255$ and it's worth its price. I strongly recomend this card for all games enthusiasts :)

14. Have you tried the graphic card without the fan? It would be interesting :P
[Posted by: Valencia_rocks_ | Date: 04/14/08]

15. I haven't :P I measured the temp with fan using GPU-Z. In idle it's approximately 32 C and during load it's max 47 C (when I played Lost Planet). The fan speed was always fixed at 35% (standard value) which makes card inaudible :)

16. Looking at this the 9600 gt 512mb gs is a bit worse than the 8800 gt only buy 2 fps that not bad
[Posted by: Wiland | Date: 05/04/08]
From the tests I have read I found out that 9600 GT GS performs almost the same like 8800 GT up to 2560x1600 resolution: the difference is about 0-8 FPS! (only some high-end games like Crysis change situation a bit). Sometimes 9600 GT GS runs the games even faster then 8800 GT ;) BTW: I overclocked my Gainward toward 733-1900-1100 (GPU, Shader Clock, Memory), a really nice overclocking, and with 2-core CPU (Opteron 180) overclocked up to 2,9 GHz I gained 10038 in 3DMark06 :) For me the choice is still obvious: buing 9600 GT GS is smarter than 8800 GT (it's not only about performance but also about noise and power consumption). If I had mainboard with SLI I would buy another Gainward 9600 GT GS (performance double using this card in SLI)!
