I think that, NVidia is better than ATI.
But im not saying ATI is garbage, the ATI graphic cards are very good, but, no good enough like the NVidia graphic cards. I know that because in my house, are two equivalent pc's:
1º 1GB RAM
512 MB NVidia GeForce
INTEL PENTIUM 3.2 Core Duo
2º 1GB RAM;
512 MB ATI Radeon
INTEL PENTIUM 3.2 Core Duo
So.. think about that..
NVidia has better shading than ATI, because the last concentrates more on the anti-aliasing.. but, the GeForces are excellent...
