What no power usage to go along with noise and thermal. That's leaving out one of the big three environment metrics.

There is a mistype for access times. They are in nanoseconds. Should be in milliseconds.

The use of VelociRaptor comes at a price of more processor usage. This penalizes the use of VelociRaptor. I think the VelociRaptor needs to be connected to a "true" hardware RAID controller to get the performance

It will be nicer if the VelociRaptor includes its own anti-vibration hardware to further reduce noise. Since the IcePak can be removed, some manufacture may include this option and maybe more options.

Another toy for the rich boys.It would have to be WAY faster than that to justify the cost-I can get a 320GB Barracuda for $70.00.

1.5TB hdds announced for August. And aren't SSDs even quicker, albeit smaller capacity for the price?
Yet a nice hdd. Two small corrections: "more optimal" and 'noise from coolers absorbs the hdd noise'.
What I'd like is an article comparing top platter capacity single platter drives from all major brands. And a noise rank as well.

High performance disk capacity should be somewhere in 64-128GB to hold few OSes apps and games. The rest can sit on large capacity, but slower disks.
From my personal experience with SATA, SCSI single or raid configurations, there is no HDD to compare with good SSD.
For 300USD you can buy high performance 64GB SSD and 500GB HDD.
this combination will give you much more performance and storage capacity then single velociraptor.

In actual real world use, I can't tell much difference in this drive or the WD 6400AAKS or a 150 Gig Raptor or a Hitachi 1 TB drive.

Be careful if you use server racks. The WD3000GLFS does not fit!You need the WD3000HLFS which can take place in a 19" server HDD slot...
