Wow, I'm surprised Xbitlabs actually did a review before most other sites!!! Usually, Xbitlabs would be late by 2 weeks or even 2 months.

Way to go!!! I'm amazed at how it's actually neck-to-neck with GTX 285. From this, we can probably safely assume that GTX 275 just wont cut the mustard.

It all depends on samples availability before NDA lift. If we have the card and enough time - the review will be in time, but we can't do anything if the card is sent to us too late.

Um, the rest of ther reviews say 4890 is a NOISY card while this site mentions it as a quiet card. BTW, ATI is rocking Nv now baby!!!

Perhaps, it is not so quiet, but rather our testbed is quite noisy with 2-fan, 1-kW PSU and box cooler.

Great review! My expectations of the 4890 were totally blown away today. I was expecting a simple increase in clock speed but ATI stepped up and delivered a revised and refined product. Way to go ATI!

I do not see how the GTX 275 will compete in this segment. The standard 4890 is way ahead of the 260 and beats the 285 in a number of tests. Is there any reason to release the 275 if it is not close to the 285 in terms of performance? Because if it is not then it will lose to the 4890 and get pounded by the 4890 OC.

Another great review from you guys. This review is the best and one of the very few genuine reviews I've seen. The variety of the tested games is marvelous....

Would love to see another review of two 4890s in CF vs 2 285gtxs in sli.

We are working on such review right now.

I second that request as well. I am currently looking to maybe upgrade my system from the 2 x 8800 Ultras in SLI to the 2 x 285 GTX's in SLI. I was wondering what I would expect when compared against a Radeon 4890 setup in Crossfire.

I still like Nvidia's drivers better than ATI simply because I dislike the CCC dependence of .NET.

Also I dont have a choice currently other than going Nvidia simply because I have an SLI motherboard. But I must say awesome job ATI. Really great to see a product refresh being more than just a refresh!

Thank you for a great review, and I was also surprised to see you guys out with a review so early usually you take a week or two to get it out. It was always worth the wait because of the exstensive tests you guys do.

But I got my candy early today! BONUS!

Congratulations to ATi/AMD awesome card and as a GTX280 owner I feel totally stupid at the moment!

RV790 does not support memory burst reads!
Check the updated R700 ISA documentation (PDF).

Some of these numbers seem to be inflated and deflated i personally own a 4850x2 and on left 4 dead at 1920x1080 with 8xaa and 16xaf i get closer to 200fps it never dips below 180. on the latest ati cat driver with a phenom 2 940 black edition oced at 3.6ghz.

Anandtech has these numbers for COD5 @ 2560x1600, which differ from yours by a considerable margin:

GTX 285: 54.3
ATI 4890: 43.3

Why does your GTX 285 only mark 46.8 FPS in this test?

From my initial review, all settings seem the same.

Xbit mentions quite well all the testbed details, incl. the setup in the drivers, where transparency/adaptive AA is being enabled by default for all the tests -- something that could give quite of a performance bias, when comparing to similar system setup, if not taken into consideration.

What kind of a performance bias would that cause?

The adaptive aa is noticeably better than the crappy msaa, and that's coming from a personal experience.

Take a look at this chart that shows the difference between the adaptive aa and the multisampling aa:

http://www.pureoverclock...._x1900gt/aa_adaa.jpg
And in case you don't know, the ms aa disables /blocks some of the HDR effects.

As for the testbed, i think that enabling the quality aa and af for both ATI and nvidia cards, and disabling some unwanted optimizations to let the application select it's own options and texture rendering methods is the best way to see how both cards perform in similar environments.

I must remind you that a variation in results is possible due to different sites using different tracks and recorded demos to bench these cards.

for example, the 4890, at 1920x1200 res.with 4xaa, matches the 285gtx in Far Cry 2 at anandtech, while it loses against the gtx285 at xbitlabs. But xbitlabs are using the benchmark tool v1.0.0.1, while anandtech are using their own recorded demo.

nice review indeed but would you please bench STALKER CS maxedout next time it would be really appreciated and again thanx for this great review.

very nice Review, i have seen many 4890 reviews on different websites but Xbitlabs has the best review so far even better then Guru3D
Way to go Guys o/

I see now. That makes sense. Thanks for the response.

The waters are muddled yet again. ATI 4890 vs GTS 250 SLI vs GTX 285!

Your right. It looks like DAMMIT did the ol 'bait and switch' routine.

Chapter 7.3

Also my Sapphire can only clock to 920Mhz core and roughly 1105Mhz memory. Which isn't bad I suppose. It does play games like the Dickens however.

I think ATi did an outstanding job with this refresh imo.

Check out the performance of DX 10.1 here. Seems a little more realistic.

I don't tend to trust hardwarecanucks. They are sponsored by EVGA.

I just checked the test bed,and i don't think that testing ATI cards with QUALITY ADAPTIVE AA vs TRANSPARENCY MULTI SAMPLING AA for NVIDIA cards is fair regarding the ATI cards.

According to this quality comparison review from Xbitlabs, even the adaptive AA on performance mode is better than NVIDIAs TR-MSAA.

ht tp://

I think that in this test,ATI cards handled a heavier load than the GEforce cards due to the more effective and demanding quality adaptive AA.
I think it would be better to test ATI cards with performance adaptive AA next time instead of quality adaptive AA for the sake of fairness in performance comparison.
