"To minimize the platform’s influence on the performance of the tested graphics cards I overclocked the quad-core CPU to 4GHz"

This means that most of the optimisations in this driver haven't been tested. The release notes say "in CPU limited settings" on most things, so it would have been nice to make some tests with a CPU limited configuration.

I did not read the release notes but it make sense. In most benches, the new driver was faster than 9.7 in the 1280x1024 w/o FSAA or AF.Good and timely article. Can you guys include a IGP in the next review. I use HD 3200 w/ A64 X2 4850e in my HTPC and I would like to see if the drivers have any effect on the performance. I play older games on that rig anyways. My discreat GPU rig uses an nVidia card. Any rumors that the green side is coming w/ performance optimization for their drivers any time soon?

as usual, quite disappointing to see performance boost mainly in 1280x1024 without AA... that's ok for middle/low end gpus, but seriously, who would buy a 4870x2 to play at this resolution?

Too bad you didnt use a core i7 @ 4ghz or something in that range so that the 4870x2 wouldnt be bottlenecked @ 20k 3d marks.

This article wasn't very thought out,

the 9.8 drivers were to make use of ALL of the data bus, hence why i7 and AMD Phenom II based PC's perform better when the 9.8 drivers are used over 9.7 drivers.

The LGA775 FSB is a severe bottleneck, hence why they dropped it for the much faster QPI, which gave the i7 an advantage in multi-card setup's, and AMD tried to fix this by outing the 9.8 drivers which allowed more of the HT 3.0 to be used, but the i7 still had an advantage because more of the QPI bus is used.
