For your results are you using in game AF or are you using control panel AF??

Did you know that the 5970 only used both gpus in full screen mode only? If FFXIV only works in window mode you will only use one GPU. Read the link below directly from AMD:

The only way to fix this issue is to go to FFXIV forum and read their pinned thread (stickied) for the fix called "Howto run FFXIV Benchmark with multi GPUs:". Yes Howto wasn't separated correctly:

The Zotac version is not Nvidia's reference,it's a custom Zotac cooling. And it performs worse. The PCB seems reference, but there are more video outputs. Nvidia reference has the fan in the middle ( just like in the small photo that is above the article) and outputs dual-VDI & one miniHDMI.

Also, at the end of the article there is no GTX 460 SLI vs. GTX 480 summarizing graph, which would be usefull if we look at the title.

I hope Xbit's can include power consumption for SLI and HD 5890.
Even though GTX 460 is almost as good as HD 5890, power consumption would be higher.

Very nice article. On a side note, I would really love to see more benchmarks including other Nvidia vendors.

The FF benchmark is in the 1600*900 column of the graph on page 12 but it's 1280*720. A note on that page might be nice.
Good article.

I'm pretty sure that where the 460 in SLI falls behind is because the SLI par only uses 1 gb of the RAM from the two cards. I don't think this will be the case when it is a dual chip. I may be way off on that.

The performance of the GTX460 is to good to ignore. I have wondered why they only supported two way sli vs tri and quad support. I also wonder the performance of a full spec. The same for the GTS 450 that is due next month.

Looks like whatever the problem was with CF is being fixed.
Strange I never got an answer to my question (1st reply).

I think it's awesome you're using FFXIV benchmark. But, yes look at post #1 to get more accurate scores. Nvidia and AMD haven't created multi GPU profiles for this benchmark so rename trick is required to improve performance and full screen is required for CrossFireX. SLI performance should be close to double compared to single card and Radeon 5970 will have a much higher score.

Square-enix is working on a new benchmark to be more accurate with retail FFXIV engine. Current benchmark is based off beta code. I don't know when this will be released.

why the topic called that when its 5980

@others (or more towards post 6.bhougha10 post for the less informed users)
SLI and CF have use the max buffer size of the Per GPU (so the 5970 may be 2gb is but its 1gb as its an 5850 CF card with an link bridge{they really should state 1gb} same goes for the GTX295 it has 2gb of ram but only 1gb is ever usable unless SLI is turned off)

Can someone give me an example of an application that would heavily depend on texture mapping but not in geometry processing.

Trying to understand the basic difference between the choices made for fermi vs radeon
