the problem whit the open source concept is that they don't have money to market there OS nor can they force OEM to use there OS but if a government like Europe would say every computer needs to use LINUX os than it would get adopted and more developers would join the community so the open source would evolve faster. so it needs to get 25% of the market to launch.

Any manufacturer who can't provide software support to use their hardware isn't a 'great GPU maker'. There are many terrible manufacturers, NVIDIA being one of the worst at making their hardware compatible. Windows isn't the entire world you know. Linux has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years, and with Steam now coming to Linux after being petitioned and begged for after many years by many thousand users it is coming, and if companies like NVIDIA can't keep up with the transition to a vendor agnostic software development approach, they might as well remain in the dust with their stone age equivalent ideals.

Linux is very fantastic in many ways. First of all, being an open source, freedom of choice OS, instead of acting like Microsoft and Apple and shoving it down your neck at punitive prices and shackling your freedom of choice. When is the last time you saw a Linux machine or computer sold without an OS at a retail store?

Linux is based off UNIX, and is properly updated at a rapid pace to keep up with modern hardware and old alike, it is already the greatest kernel the world has ever seen. The amount of code and hardware compatibility with the kernel far outpaces anything Microsoft and Apple could dream of.

The Android market is a great example of a kernel that is branched directly beneath the primary Linux kernel. Open Source itself is well matured to a stage where Proprietary isn't making sense anymore. Even Apple's Mac OSX is based off Open Source software and UNIX kernel, but it is honestly inferior in every way to a modern day Linux distribution such as Ubuntu.

It isn't that Linus thinks too high of himself. He holds the same respect, even greater respect, by the technological community than Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Apple had wanted to hire him to kill the Linux threat against Mac OSX so they could have the best OS as well, offering a large sum of money to win him over. He still denied this, he loves to program, but he doesn't want to hand over the keys to some corporate entity like Apple and destroy the open source OS he has spent nonstop time and effort into.

Today's majority of smartphones are running on Linux based Android and majority of webservers are Linux based. Now tell me what is fantastic to you? Maybe those does not exist.

x.org isn't broken, and this sounds like a distribution issue rather than a Linux issue. Do you understand what Linux is? Do you understand the difference between a distribution and a kernel that the distribution is based around?

As well, this article wreaks of falseness and likely has little knowledge regarding Linux. Linux is used by a lot more than 1-2% of the PC market, even moreso on the smartphone and business world. NVIDIA is trying to make tons of chips for Android smartphones, and the last thing I remember was that Android is Linux. There are a lot of people who dual boot with their favourite Linux distribution and Windows, the only people who don't likely have no idea what Linux is besides the phone in their pocket as retail stores do not make an effort to sell Linux PCs.

I recommend the author of this article to try out the latest distributions Linux has. The amount of evolution from open source development far outpaces the propriety solutions such as Apple or Microsoft. I have installed plenty of Ubuntu, ZorinOS, Fedora, Linux Mint, etc. distributions on a variety of machines for relatives and customers because they prefer it over the slow and ugly Windows counterparts.

A machine that easily updates all the software installed automatically, a machine that they cannot accidentally break by messing up system files because they need root access to manipulate these files, and much higher security than any proprietary OS due to the nature of open source software development, it is a lot easier to use and won't get slow over time.

The problem with geeks or nerds is control. Given out source code in an open way provides this control that geeks and nerds wants. People do not know that it is nVidia's business to not make their drivers to be open to the public. I do not blame nVidia of keeping their Linux drivers closed source because they are a business or a company that is protecting their property.

Linus Torvalds is full of BS and like any nerd or geek wants control. Screw Torvalds to curse at nVidia that actually supports their hardware in Linux to the fullest compared to any company. Not even Intel is able to provide full support for their hardware in Linux. ATI and now AMD graphics does not support their hardware to the fullest. nVidia provides an easy GUI to control their cards, so Torvalds is full of BS.

Sheesh people stop bowing to your knees to some idiot that prefers control and get a brain what some companies are actually doing. There are companies out there that actually supports multiple operating systems compared to other companies.

I use Linux on a daily basis with a nVidia graphics card and the damn thing works and functions. Linus Torvalds "FUCK YOU!"

Nice one Linus , AMD on the other hard releases 2 graphic drivers the official one for Linux platforms which is free but not open source and the open source for the Dev to fiddle with .

People even Google chrome have an open source counterpart , called chromium and its very crucial that if your successful company with many products to provide support for other platforms , i remember when i had an crappy 8400 Nvidia card , how hard was it for me to download the latest official driver from Ubuntu , the easy way to to grab the latest .deb , but it you want the latest driver , man that required something technically close of patching the whole kernel , it was motherfking hard , logging out of x org , then running the installer then hunting doing missing libraries , it was awful .

so seriously fuck off NVIDIA

That is a problem with Ubuntu. Does not have such problems in other distributions. I use a Gentoo based distribution called Calculate. No problems with nVidia drivers installing. Of course, I do not use the latest kernel versions.
