1. 
You guys should have the 680 SOC against the fastest HD7970 - Asus Matrix and pushed it to 1300mhz and see what happens. It would have beaten a 1250mhz GTX680 without any problems.

It's amazing that even an overclocked 1202mhz (1254mhz GPU boost) GTX680 can't even convincingly beat a stock HD7970 Ghz edition. Cats 12.11 added a nice performance boost.

I also think the new triple-slot GIGABYTE GV-N680OC-4GD is better than the SOC card as the 5 small fans are bound to fail quick and are not going to be as quiet as fewer larger fans.

Nvidia may rule 1080p, but the GK104 starts to show its mid-range origins when you crank up the pixel count. OTOH, the 7900 series really comes into its own at these higher resolutions that allow it to flex that 384bit bus and those extra shaders.

The reduced power consumption isn't that big of a surprise given the type of mosfet used but usually is more expensive. I wish that there were more cards like this and I always enjoy seeing the bar being pushed higher by pushing a gpu like this to the very limit.

As nice as the card is, the fan feature is well, may I say... just a gimmick from Gigabyte. Made for dudes with more cash than brains really. Or dudes who want to showoff this card(s) to friends through the large window on their huge case and have the friends awestruck in disbelief.

Yup, you have it 100% correct. Gimmicks are the new marketing device for companies who have nothing better to offer. It's amazing to see reviewers tout how great the shipping box is or the LEDs on a fan or the miniture fan design on this GPU that is prone to whine and failure. In addition choosing better components for the PCB is nice but it in no way guarantees any better performance or reliability. The 8-phase power on a GPU is marketing at it's best or worst if you understand the hype.

You'd be surprised how many 13 year old kids will nag their Mummy until she buys them this kind of crap. A fool and his money are soon parted.
