If you put your money into Intel's pocket then don't complain. A conscious consumer doesn't support a company using illegal and/or unethical practices by purchasing their products.

Trying to defeat your competition through hard ball price-warring isn't unethical at all in my book. It's not like Intel put a gun to someone's head.

When Intel engaged itself in a price-war? Since when is paying "marketing-support" to OEMs in case they set aside competitors' products and bundling are legal or ethical? What do you think why the EU fined Intel and why the FTC tried to do the same?

I think paying Dell 100% of what made up their annual profit, just for using Intel at the exclusion of AMD, is a highly highly unethical business practice. The court judges agreed. Period.

And nothing has changed, Intel still does "business" the very same way.

(Just as a sidenote, when you buy a product, you should look farther than the most instant benefits that particular purchase brings you. Let's say the company pollutes your backyard with its production processes, suddenly it doesn't look like the deal of the year. Similarly, when Intel uses its market power to diminish competition and you assist to it, then be ready to pay the real price of your actions.)

i've just purchased 4-cores unlocked AMD piledriver-based athlon II for under 70$ - i want to see how it will play out in real life - machine which i'm installing it in doesn't do benchmarks whole day, or one-threaded (or any-number-threaded application whole day, for the matter of fact) 24/7. for that money, i could buy heavily castrated intel, but i hate having features deliberately cut-off for profit

basically, i don't care what benchmarks say (though i conduct them myself sometimes), cause they don't reflect my usage of computer - i know you do super-pi and render scenes 24/7 and also have a eyesight of an eagle which is capable of seeing difference between 60 and 120 frames/second - but i don't. any of that.

when i return from work, where i have to deal with tens of different company-owned types of intel-based configurations, ranging from you-won't-believe-how-old to new i5-3xxx, i typically don't start to put various loads and measure seconds of difference, or watt/h saved - especially not on *that* machine. fast enough is what i seek - and low initial investment for secondary computer

anyhow, soon i'll have unbiased, personal-based opinion of piledriver-architecture, with common user point-of-view - though i'm an it-professional for living - at home i'm just average user with low demands (some office, some graphics, light gaming ending with diablo3/civ - that kind of stuff)

Agreed. Of course they're not going to use 28nm in 2014. That would be a lost cause, as the article suggests. AMD is going to start swinging from the corner with Rory Read in charge with a new road map. First seize the day in the tablet and low power x86 laptop markets with Jaguar cores. They already have an unconfirmed Microsoft Surface Pro win in Temash. Next will be Apple, who are desperate to ditch the Intel/ Nvidia taxes in their quest to deliver more affordable products to Chinese, Indian, Russian and Brazilian middle class markets.

... one thing that might actually help AMD until then (and its so obvious no one at AMD or even their fan's here seems to have considered it ) is AMD finally making a reasonable and super cheap business decision by pushing their suppliers/vendor's and getting some (AMD branded if you like, seeing as that seems to be their latest big PR profit's plan)
cheap dual and quad socket Home/SOHO motherboard's in the global consumer shopping chain's.

but would/will the world's high markup server Co-location vendor's like or let that potential option happen.

after all we cant have the world's masses of Home/SOHO users getting cheap access to that Generic 10GE kit, next thing you know they'll be demanding cheap 10Gigabit/s routers/switches and PCI-E 10GE card kits for their homes, then where do we milk our server profits from as every lower tear customer in the data center then buys the cheaper functional kit.

for sure their AMD PR marketing of their real quads +x2 integer units as more core doesn't help their credibility here, where as some real cheap dual and quad socket Home/SOHO motherboard's + more DDR3 sockets to populate later might.

wouldn't you consider buying these potential boards and populate with extra cores + ram later phantom down voter!

Absolutely we should remember that Jim Keller is the head of AMD's CPU Division. He's never made a bad chip. The DEC Alpha, the AMD Athlon/Athlon64 and the Apple A5/A6 ARM chips have all been outstanding in their respective markets. I'm sure the next performance AMD CPU will kick serious ass and take names.

We should also be reluctant to believe that AMD really will take a full 2 years to release their next CPU. They can publically state this, and then release the chip 'early' and it will be a win/win situation. The thing to look for is socket specs. Once we start hearing those, we'll know better how long AMD will really take to release their new chips.

It all comes down to answering the market needs. It's cool to have the fastest product available, but most your mom's and aunts will buy a computer allowing them to find recipes on the web, connect to Facebook, work on some pictures and play to Mahjong and Spades. Their first buying criteria is Price. Ain't this exactly where AMD shine? I say their cpu's are still very competitive in the lower mainstream/mainstream departments. I've been building surprisingly great "budget" gaming/video editing computers using AMD cpus. The money saved from the cpu mobo combo was invested in a solid video card and SSD drive resulting in machines offering excellent computing balance.

Haswell was going to be Intel's answer to Bulldozer, if this matched the performance of Sandy. Finally, seeing the really very poor performance of Bulldozer, Intel decided to delay all his new products (delay = save money) and keep improving its already released chips.

Paradoxically, this is the same as AMD did, when he had the Athlon 64 as the flagship product, and Intel biting the dust with its Pentium 4. One morning, Intel introduced the Core 2 Duo and AMD's dream became a nightmare.
When the Phenom 2 finally can match C2D and AMD got relax again, Intel came to scene with Sandy, and the troubles started again (for AMD obviously).
Moral: If Intel (AMD) do not feel under pressure, simply will make money by selling what he already has.
