whats the point of a super butt SLOW atom x86 CPU when its not going to be used to run windows! Intel must be giving these away to Acer as they are so slow they CANT even run windows 8 ( non RT )

can i install ubuntu? i read z-based atoms were not x86 compatible, unless i read it wrong in that more accurately, they can't be used to install linux in the manner of a desktop?

In theory you should be able, but I don't know when it will be provided.
About compatibility, there was a mentioning some time ago that SOC Atoms will be missing the PCI bus. This makes it incompatible with (desktop) Windows, as it's build around the PCI bus (info: PCI express emulates a PCI bus on SW side). This has nothing to do with x86. As for linux, please be aware that Android uses the linux kernel.
