The placement of the graphics slot is the same on an ATX board as it is on a mATX, so your arguments about the card getting in the way are totally incorrect.
The only issue most will find is the smaller space in a mATX Case, and a lesser amount of expansion slots.
Just because the board is smaller it doesn't mean it is incapable of Crossfire or SLI, there are a number of high performance mATX boards on the market suitable for gaming.

I wonder sometimes, how do you pick "similar products" for comparison brand v brand. It is probably more tricky than writing long, deep and professional review :D(I enjoy by the way concerning benchmarks you use in performance comparison).
These two are bit different motherboards concerning price, at least in EU. In nowadays 20% price difference cant be called "very similar" when in online business it is up to few dime differences to be or not to be...
If we take instead GA-Z77M-D3H (EUR 80) GA-Z77MX-D3H as well EUR 80 (still more affordable than P8Z77-M EUR 95.-) conclusion could be opposite. Beside it is most energy efficient (by 32 boards group test), has option to add voltage and average 3570K runs easily 44-46x...
