So 2016 looks like it will be the year of the Linux desktop due to Microsoft's dreadful mistakes. There is a big opportunity for RedHat to step in.

I feels now that people are forced to shift to Linux OS. Linux is more flexible, dynamic OS & super secure.

Linux has terrible support for drivers, specially graphics, exotic peripherals, sound cards, etc; not to mention the almost nonexistent support for quality games.

That was the case 7 years ago and that perception continues in posts such as yours. Since Google adopted Linux as the base of Android, things have changed.

I like the Android to stay with mobile devices, not to replace my desktop OS, thank you very much.

You've missed the point completely and demonstrated your lack of understanding of the subject.

TAViX: You ousted yourself dude, you never even used Linux. Else you would know Linux, in 2013, supports darn near everything you plug in. AND it's true Plug n Play like Mac, no drivers to install.

As a Linux installer, I recommend Xubuntu for new users. It's Ubuntu, without the Unity interface. All the Ubuntu goodness with the support for Hardware and the Software Center.

Grab a copy of Ubuntu 13.04 and silence your uneducated view. It's highly disgraceful for someone engaging in technical discussions to not understand Linux. If you were knowledgeable enough about Linux, you wouldn't be using Windows for anything other than gaming. Windows is bloated, ugly, and featureless compared to Linux distros.

I'm using a Creative Recon3D sound card, a Radeon HD 7950 graphics card, and a Bitcoin Jalapeno exotic peripheral without problem. Furthermore, every printer I have ever connected to the machine works without needing to install any drivers at all. Even further, unlike Windows, I didn't even have to install drivers for my motherboard or any other device.

Linux supports far more hardware and software than Windows and the rate at which this evolves is so significant that many drastic changes can happen within six months, improving the quality of life of Linux.

Finally, even if a game isn't ported on Linux, Steam has been designed to run efficiently in Wine and with the recent CSMT patch a week ago for Wine, many games are running 50-500% faster, sometimes even faster than running the same game in Windows. Wine development, like all open source software, is exponentially increasing as well.

Linux sucks. It's only popular because people love to hate Microsoft. Nothing about it is ready for prime time.

Wild speculations. Change UI dramatically is not easy task. Modern UI is just beginning and MS will not drop it quickly, but improve it over next OS releases.

Just stop this bullshit. No need for an OS other than Windows 7.

let's make it short-
1.unified OS(wp8+winRT)-nice step
2.brand-new operating systems every year-nice OS -Best tool for real-time NSA spying that's why i will never use google chromebook.

the only way to avoid google or nsa spying is to get a black hat and use tails and tor plus many other tricks. to believe any M$ OS to be more "private" than any other OS is to be naive beyond belief and is an entirely false rational against google et al.

The truth is, as shown very clearly by the rise of mobile, is that the "OS" and the GUI are all but irrelevant, beyond personal preference. There are many ways to get any particular task done, regardless of "operating system" or GUI or "app"lication. Mobile has shown us that Windows is not worth paying for and is far from being a perfect solution. Windows 7 was hardly more than a glossy re-skin of XP and was only "successful" due to being the default "choice" of the uniformed masses. Windows 8 and Windows 8 Phone fail because there is no significant advantage of other GUIs and they are ugly to most users eyes, or at least uglier than Android/iOS/OSX/Win7. Personally I use Android (Linux fork) and Linux Mint and find no significant usage or task achievement issues with either; and they are both free of charge.

If "privacy" is truly and concern, then you will need to develop Linux based skills, use obscure minority tools and abandon M$ forever.

Would have moved to Ubuntu a few years back. However, the support of the gaming industry is not there yet. There are some flashes now with Valve, but until there is anything solid I am stuck with MS.

cloud(web) OS -Microsoft is going to taste cyanide
1.after NSA showdown everyone knows that every american firm is spying for them and google, microsoft is on top so how u can think intelligent people will use web OS, even people migrating their emil to non US based mail providers(including myself). will work only in developed countries where countries like china(2nd biggest economy),india(3rd biggest economy) internet speed is very slow according to data in india 90% of internet connections is below 1Mbps.

3.Hacking-here is the real twist, remember luv bug virus affected whole world made by a teen.i also developed some code in past and it will take 4-5 years for me to hack a server so u can understand how much it will take for a professional hacker.MS even can't imagine what will happen... whole world will be in hackers hand from history to bank detail nothing will be safe.if today our system hacks what best we can do is formatting our computer and fresh OS install but what will happen when whole web based os will be hacked.....can't imagine

this web os hacking will cost loss of trillions of dollar as everyone uses microsoft OS.
My best advise is- give people a choice whether they want to use web based OS or not... make two OS one is web based other is conventional.

cloud based OS hmm well looks like Windows 9 is the last MS OS I will be using on a pc that if they fix all the issues that many people complained about in Windows 8. dear MS, we want an actual start menu, an aero glass option and the ability to disable metro or remove it from our os altogether in windows 9 thank you and if you can't do that then windows 7 will remain on my pc...

I still doesn't get the idea of cloud OS. Nowadays storage is not a problem, every PC, laptops, netbooks offers huge local storage, what is the need for everything cloud ?? For smartphones, tablets like devices some form of cloud features may be good but not everything cloud.

it's not just about storage it's also about unifying the hardware since everything is based off the servers, so it eradicates hardware performance and compatibility concerns. I mean it's good for companies, because companies don't have to spend a lot of money on computers and software for each of their employees. as for home users It's a diff story, because sharing a platform with millions of other people just doesn't give you the sense of privacy and security that you would have unlike storing your own files on your own pc, which is why im not a fan of a cloud based os for my home use.

Cloud? Really? Sorry Microsoft, but I don't want my every move attached to your cloud.

Guys, don't read into it that much.

I bet it's just gonna have better cloud integration out of the box and thats it.

Microsucks = Morons
Windoze = inferior, defective O/S used to rape consumers
Cloud = dumbness for 99.9% of the world
A new Microsucks O/S every year means you will PAY for Microsucks mistakes instead of getting free updates to correct them

Linux has a LOT of consumer potential if the developers would get off their collective arses and deliver:

1. A proper self-installing edition with all of the correct drivers

2. Proper Linux software existed so that consumers could migrate their existing Windoze systems to Linux and properly import all of their existing data such as for businesses

3. Linux distro sellers provided proper support for their products instead of saying they don't know what drivers are required for basic PC hardware.

I have tried NUMEROUS times to migrate my Biz to Linux and Suse and the other Linux distros I have tried are a royal PITA unless you are a geek or want to spend a lot of time learning Linux. If they really want to cash in with Linux they need to make it USER FRIENDLY. I don't have the time or interest to spend figuring out how to configure a basic O/S when my billable rate is $300/hr.

I've been building and maintaining my own PCs and systems for 20+ years and I have yet to find a Linux distro that provides the above needs of small to medium sized businesses.

I personally hope that Microsucks puts themselves out of business thru their own stupidity as they have defrauded the world for over 20 years. This is a golden opportunity for the Linux folks if they get off their arses and take advantage of it.

There's a very good reason why people (software engineers in particular) choose to pay for Windows rather that get Linux for free: Linux just plain sucks for any purpose other than running Apache.

"and will feature all-new user interface that could be controlled using eyesight"

And what about Windows 11? Will that have an interface that can be controlled by farting?

Funny how they can't see the elephant in the room. If they would be just a tiny little bit less greedy, they could still be earning truckloads of cash without everyone complaining:

1.) Professionals who use PCs daily type a lot. They don't need fancy touch based gimmicks. They need the system to behave consistently without hampering their productivity.
2.) Don't try to fix what's not broken. Most of the folks using WinXP/Win7 were pretty happy with the way it looked and the functionality it provided. (Start menu, Aero, stability etc.)
3.) If you want to fight so hard with the likes of Apple or Google, then borrow a step from them and develop a dedicated mobile platform. Don't try to combine different input paradigms. That's a lose-lose scenario.
4.) I would be pretty happy with buying an OS for a fixed price and paying extra for additional feature packs or services. Again, don't try to rape the populous, try to offer them something extra and you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised by the result.

Whenever I hear the word "cloud" used in computing I instantly lose interest. relying on others to store my stuff only to find that cloud is down for maintenance just when I need it, Go to play a "single" player game only to find I need to log in to play and once again server is down, Screw that!

then the "excuse" is that there are redudant servers.....what do i do if my router broke? no amount of reduantant internet infastructure can fix that.

also they might say that rarley happens, it happens alot to people, not having a connection or a server being down, the fact is it happens and its a pain when it does.
