1. Windows ME has got to be the -worst- investment I ever made in a software purchase. Microsoft totally ripped users off with that OS.

I agree!
Windows 98 was doing the job, no need for ME. If they want to release a new feature set (SP like) for the 9x platform it would be the 98TE (Third Edition).
I donk know when ME was released (2000?), but is this the suppord we get (4 years)? And if i keep the same machine with the same OS?
200€ for XP and only 4 years suppord this is really a joke.
No wonder Linux is getting adepts.

Simple enough:

Windows 2000 had come out, and added some new features. Microsoft was telling everyone DOS was dead, look for a "2000 Home" or something like that. Whistler got held up by lawsuits, so Microsoft scrambled to do something. They grafted parts of Windows 2000 on to Windows 98, hid DOS, and called it Windows ME. They spread FUD that it was NT-based (reviewers found out in about five minutes of playing with it that it was really 98 with stuff grafted on, though), so that people would buy it. It was VERY unstable, which just gave it away more. WHY couldn't they have applied their resources to Whistler and taken the Opera approach to releasing software: "When it's ready"?
