Max. power to TDP ratio changed from 1.12x on socket 478 to 1.31x to socket LGA775. Therefore TDP data for LGA775 look better than they actually are. Max. power of 3.4 and 3.6 GHz P4 for LGA775 is 151W !!! Comparable TDP value is 135W, not 115W. Just another nice cheat from Intel.

I do not find Icc increase from 91 to 119A as "slight heat dissipation increase".

Excellent platform! Too bad the processor isn't at the same level....

I was thinking that DD2 would give a performance boast, since the P4 architecture relies on higher bandwidth, and higher latency (the pros of RDRAM i850), but I guess not....

The number of pins is a little strange, "future" processors proof... integrated memory controller is impossible so... more power, guess I wont buy it just for that. Imagine a PC 24H day downloading, ...., good electricity bill, especially if you also get a Geforce 6800.

The new Celeron 256kb, will consume more energy than Willamette (older .18 tech)? And speed will be faster?

"Then the company announced its plans about the implementation of the NX bit support in their Pentium 4 processors based on the Prescott core, which are due in the fall. This bit is supposed to help implement additional protection of the system OS against viruses: this technology has actually been also borrowed from AMD Athlon 64 on their launch day."

Didn't AMD borrow this from the Itanium??

Nice benchmarks :).

For the "Multitasking" tests, is a lower score better? Or a higher score?

Well a thorough review - well done to the xbit standard :) Nice job!

I think the loss of the LAN on CSA is a bad mistake, and seems totally illogical, in this day when LAN connections are more important to more users than ever before. Illogical and worse for the end user. They should return that feature fast imo, maybe with the 925XE.

You've made no mention of the overclock issues, yet you were the first to bring it up many months ago in the rumour mill. I'll be interested in your take on that issue, and overcoming it if possible and how well once it is overcome. (note 10% is a poor oc, 20% isn't great its just better, so I'd like to see if they get past that)

You're probably going to be doing even more testing on the 925XE when it arrives so we shall see on that front. The lock and the performance just seem to put the FX-53 in a better, and better light.

It seems a bit sad to be asking more money from users than before and to be giving less performance than before :( and then locking down enthusiasts too. Oh well.

Does Clockgen get around the lock?

And might be interesting to compare the 925XE to the 250GB. With the CSA bus the 875 was just behind the 250 in throughput but just ahead in CPU utilization. Now I expect that the 250 will beat the 925X in both and probably the same for the 925XE. I'd be interested to see how a mature 250gb does on all areas though, when its mature enough to be included in testing.

:)

I find it interesting that you leave out the PowerMac g5 from these test. More graphics professionals use macs.. Why would you leave out the fastest machines for these tests?

The FSB of the 3.46EE is 1066, not 800mhz as you stated. Combined with the Asus P5AD2 Premium motherboard (which supports the 1066 mhz fsb), OCZ or Corsair 667 mhz DDR2 RAM easily reaches the native 711mhz native to the board(without flinching) so the CPU multiplier at 14 times 278mhz fsb is 3.893 GHz. Asus makes overclocking quite simple, and at nearly 398 GHz is completely stable and remains cool, given that the motherboard utilizes stack cool, a pcb layer directly under the CPU that reduces the thermal output by 10 degrees celsius. 775 Socket coolers from Zalman or Thermaltake, et.al. provide aditional cooling for overclocking. This, combined with a Matrix RAID array utilizing Native Command Queuing and a pair of WD 740 Raptors, yields the fastest performance seen to date from any Intel based desktop PC
