Doesn't mention S.M.A.R.T? And tools like Active SMART. Takes some of the guess work out.

Running fsck on a disc that you believe to be physically dodgy is dangerous - make sure you never let it fix things it believes are broken; it is designed to fix logical inconsistencies on the drive and can get into a real mess if the hardware is actually failing.

If you want to check the state of your hard disc on Linux you should be looking at the 'smartmontools' to read the diagnostics off the drive and run tests on them.
