Yep, I thought that sounded familiar, I remeber seeing that popup when I ran my Spyblocker program. Hmm, maybe they have an updated non-spyware version? (not likely but oh well) _________________ WoB- Shouting angers the filet o' fish. |

no offence, but it seems a little weird that xbit is endorsing a specific blocker like this, and i'm wondering why they chose this one _________________ -eric |

I use google's toolbar. I actually do use it to do searches and the same time it blocks ads for me. I clear it once in a while but at the moment, 667 ads blocked!
I'm pretty sure a lot of you use it.

haha... using someone else's advertising to advertise something different. way to go Konz.
when i saw the headline, i thought it was for providing any donations to xbit so that they don't have to use ads to generate cash, kinda like TheInquirer. But i rem there being some thread where smth along the lines of xbit doesn't require such funds was mentioned... |

I never got any pop-up from any web site. Why? because I have my Active Script and Java script disabled. Or I should say Disabled for "Internet Zone" (for those that really check out IE's feature)
only those web site that I trusted (sorry, not you Xbit-labs , although I visit you daily) will be added to my "Trusted Zone", which got Script enabled.
People, check out Windows Server 2003's IE. they finally enforce you do place web site into different zones. It prompt you about adding site into "trusted zone". In other words, default zone is Internet, and you should NOT enable script at all.
The feature is in IE since 5.0???? just no body really care.
Give it a try. and post some comments.
BTW. ofcourse, I also use Junk-EMail (i.e. hotmail, etc.) account to register any forum. |

| for_xbitlabs. ah you should know better by now. xbit outta all the tech sites i have been to is the most user caring site out there... due to the low count of total users and higher number of daily participating users, it has been built into a community where people know most of each other over time. but that also allows us to request certain changes, for example Quick Reply, Networking and Security, ... and be heard by the admins as well. all in all xbit mods/admins care about the users and also have time to keep things in order due to very few spamatic postings here... |

This is most likely why. Alexa is an online ranking service, they list sites and their "rank" which corresponds to how big they are. Right now X-Bit is ranked 7,890 (which is great btw). Your rank goes up when more people use the toolbar at your site. I always have it and the google toolbar running. Many times advertisers will use alexa to confirm traffic numbers. |

The fact they they keep trying to shove it down our throats (this is the second time I've seen it put up as a news article), leads me to believe they have something to gain.
That something to gain is statistics on it's readers. Notice the sites above from other users and how it mentions other sites the site visitors visited, number of hits, etc. The Alexa registry key that the spyware sources tell you to remove was doing the same thing. The two are one in the same, except using two different systems. The Google toolbar has been altered to send the ranking information to a service Amazon has setup that resembles their merchandise system to track people's buying patterns.
Now, Alexa (now owned by Amazon) are trying to track your web browsing patterns to make money, but why is Xbitlabs helping them?
Ego and greed as well. If their site has a lot of hits, and is shown on the information of another site, than perhaps more people will come. If more people come, than they make more money of the advertising.
I have no problem with you guys trying to make a living off this site, but when you try to do sneaky stuff like this, allowing your loyal readers to be tracked, I think you've gone beyond the realm of common morality, and turned deceitful. |

I have been using mozilla firebird for about three months now and there is NO sign of turning back to IE. Firebird blocks all kinds of pop-ups and it has a built in google search bar at the top right. To get it to be "fully functional" you have to download a few plug-ins especially the shockwave and flash ones oh and java but thats it. |

These were options in IE long before Firebird -- or even Moz -- came out. _________________ I think I'm pompous enough already. A pompous signature would just be redundant. |

| Alexa sounds fishy to me. What is really fascinating IMO is that the Alexa registry entry that you guys were refering to is on Xp by default. Why the @#%$% would Microshaft put third party spyware in their OS? As far as the Alexa toolbar goes, who needs another piece of software tracking them? |
