This Team Liquid article announced something that for me as a long time Starcraft player - and admirer of Boxer's playing style, was dazzling. Now most of the fun will also dissapear from The Starcraft arena.

Lim Yo-Hwan - aka SlayerS_`BoxeR' and a bit of info about him.

As said, All Hail The Emperor!

Heh, I got back in town just last night and i am now heading out to Niagara Falls with my cousins from US. I am usually not a fan of others LOL! I do what I can and take things to next level. Lately I am losing my touch with SC as it is filled too many hackers, retards, n00bs, whinners, ... The list goes on forever.

STBTechAL655, PM me your nicks. Mine I have listed before but will list them again: Stupify, XZerg, Aikh, Disterbed. Disterbed had much better stats until BNET killed the account for some goddamn reason and I had to recreate it.

I play Starcraft since Goliaths did't had a range upgrade and Marines did't had Medics to support them. From 2001 when I started viewing VODs, Boxer continued to be the most entatainig player to watch, because he could turn around the math, he came up with new strats from time to time, and he was flawed. I don't like too much the public Battlenet, because most players either play money maps, or just play a few maps until they learn them by heart and become scripted.
What I like about LANs is that I can allways say "hey, look, some new melee maps came out, let's play them". Im my experience, I played against some of the "scripted" players I know on Lost Temple or such, got my ass kicked 5-0, and then when I played them on maps that either me and my adversary didn't know, I usually won on every map.
That's the worst way to go in my oppinion, to get scrips on a few maps, and then be helpless on the ones you play at first sight.

Anyway, my greatest achievement in Starcraft is not score, is that I brough some 50 to 60 new players to the game, and some of they really progressed.

I also did some mapping, uploaded some at Starcraft.org, but didn't end up with much downloads, I think because melee or 1v1 maps are not very popular. Anyone interested in some fun to play multiplayer maps, PM me with an mail adress you use as secondary, I'll mail some of them to you when I'll get home.

Man, did I ranted or what? Smile

If those maps of yours allows the AI to play well on them i might be interested in them. Me and 2 others play some vs AI and getting together maps that the AI runs good on is NOT easy...

Well, most of them are designed to use as human multiplayer maps, but I'll take a look at them, how the AI plays, and maybe (most probably) add some scripts to them.

What do you guys prefer, simple Insane AI or Scripted Insane AI.

On most of them the AI played reasonably well, but not enough to pose problems to a three human player team, but it also depends on the team's skill.

Most of the maps were intended to be 1v1 or 2v2 rabid battlefields, with some of them having some nice twist depending on the each player's starting point; some are quite open to massive assault, others are intricate, and others could start as a ground or air map; most of them allow drop or micro tactics. Most of them look very interesting from an artistic point of view when all the minimap is visible. Eh, what can I say, 4 years of art school.

I'll get home and then I'll see what I can do. I'm glad at least someone is interested my work. Smile

Best possible is if they can run as top vs bottom.
Otherwise, you will probably need to give AIs unlimited resources, and/or a serious boost to their units which means limiting options on what race can be played by humans.

But if you can script an AI that is good, ill be happy.
Currently when we play we usually run 2 persons vs 5 or 6 AI or 3 persons vs 5 AI.

If you manage to make a good AI map, the result will sometimes be like this:

Or this:

I'll see what I can do, AI can be scripted to do very specific things, but those kind of options aren't available in the map editor bundled with the game.

You cand do things as: if the X player at 10.00 game time has no Science Vessels and no turets in an specific location/s, the AI will load his cloaked ghost, that was allready given, transport it to X base via a predetermined rute, drop it and nuke the X base.

These kind of scripts I've seen used, but I think I cannot create.

But no worryes, I have a sneaky enough imagination, and I'll try to come up with interesting events.

Dire, those were the comps using an normal AI, no? Because in the Insane script the computer attack with 12-14 carriers or battlecruisers each at a time. You should see what annoyance could be a protoss Insane AI when he starts using it's 20+ high templars. Laughing
The major strenght/weaknes of the Insane script is the fact that the computer attacks like ... insane, and very quick also. Smile

In a week or so I would be able to come up with a few news on the maps.

I've done about 100 StarCraft maps but everytime I format I'm to lazy to save them.

Optimising for the AI and particularily the entrances really takes up alot of time with trying to use high ground for bases that still keeps things even for the comps is also really tough overall.

I used to play online PVP but I really prefer co-operative I get far more satisfaction from it when 2 or 3 of us using headphones get together and battle on a map against 4 or 5 comps, a good match usually requires one of us to get bounced out of our base by the comps and the other 2 picking up the slack leading to massive battles and the comps fully upgrading.

I've done about 6 maps that I and 2 friends have never beaten they were all 256 X 256 maps, a few of the battles lasted 3 hours but the comps would eventually wear us down and fatigue would give in.

if anything I wish we still had a cppl of the maps we were unable to win on , the entrances were laid out well and their was water providing enough distance so that Terran Siege couldn't see the main entrance defenses but so much space to cover and drops are inevitable.

additionally a friend of mine is obsessed with using Terran battlecruisers and while I enjoy getting up a force of 20 cruisers and a cppl science vessels as much as the next guy on 256 X 256 maps they are exceptionally slow to attack and to escape even when trying to repair them on the fly with 6 SCV's they usually get trashed....

going to be playing StarCraft this weekend with a friend co-op.

I don't bother with Brood War anymore I enjoyed it but I don't play the game as much as in the past and Brood War while excellent really required an additional level of concentration and on the fly strategy whereas I find the original StarCraft far more relaxing.

I wish they would come up with a 3d version of StarCraft and Brood War using the models they have from the 2d version with all other factors and units being equal. while I really want a StarCraft 2 to be made I fear it will become a hassle much like WarCraft 3 was in some regards with micromanagement.

I really enjoyed WarCraft 3 and the Frozen Throne but it tested my levels of interest with so much maintenance required in battle.

Nal_Ra (P) vs. Boxer (T)@ Python

"The Dreamer meets the Emperor once again. While I don’t know the exact statistics between these two players I can honestly say I can’t remember the last time Boxer stole a game from Ra. If history is any indicator, the Emperor is in for a tough time.
These two met in a recent ProLeague match on Monty Hall, which ended in signature Boxer fashion with a spectacular string of locked-down-and-destroyed Carriers... and a thorough face smashing there after from a wave of lot/goon. However, Boxer rolls over for no opponent and has been bragging somewhat about his newly refined TvP skills. Perhaps he wrote off that PL game and has saved a special strategy for this one."

Clone, you must be insane! (and yes i realise the post is OLD, just seems i didnt see it at the time...)
Anyways, check with the people you play with, my friend never remembers to save our maps(or is to lazy to bother, or both), but i got them all and backed up on CD and DVD both.

2 players vs 6 AI, now thats where you get a challenge if all AIs play at their best. Which is the problem with SC, most of the time, at least 1 in 3 AIs plays low level only or worse yet, goes semiinactive, just builds a handful of units and keep replacing them only after their lost and spends rest of its time just harvesting resources and building bases with little or no defenses.

I think the most extreme in regards to "massive battles" we had was in a 3 vs 5 game when 2 players got their start bases overrun early and 4 out of the 5 hours the game took was a constant ongoing attack against our combined base by all 5 AIs fully upgraded, IIRC we had total killnumbers somewhere around 12 or maybe it was 15 K.

You managed to run on 256*256 maps without getting killed off by the "Cannot create more units" problem?
We stopped making or playing on maps that large looong time ago, because only way to play on them was with at most 4 AIs and thats too easy 9 times in 10.

Hehe, but BW is so much more FUN! Wink

The probably nastiest map i have made is the latest version of "Runawayexpansion", the original map is vaugely like a BGH except you start on the inner resource areas, and so have a usually safe place to expand to by going towards the edge of the map, with exception of the times you´re to slow and an AI manage to build a base there. Smile
Only downside is that with all starting points closer to each other, AIs can start attacking faster.

The latest version however is funny because it adds a land connection along the map edge, all around, which means from the start you can get attacked from either 2 or 3 sides depending on starting point.
When AIs play good on it, its easily the most lethal map sofar.
Although i have been thinking perhaps i should widen the "edge road" a little to allow the AI to use it better.

BTW, anyone knows how to force replays to actually REPLAY the game rather than just randomly make something happen?

Its really odd how it runs replays. I just checked to see if i had any replays of "epic" fights, but "our" players just quits doing anything after a while in every single damn replay i tried. Its rather strange seeing a game go on, when after less than 1/20 of its total time, all human players have been wiped out, something that of course didnt happen in the game the replay is supposed to show...

lol I was changing comps every 3 months until 2005 so generally I was losing the maps but depending on who hadn't upgraded lately we would get the maps off of them, then 4 of us upgraded within a month of one another and they were lost.

we really took the maps for granted, I could always whip up a map in about an hour from memory always tweaking about 16 different layouts ranging from 192 X 192 to 256 X 256 but I haven't done a map in so long I've lost the artistic side let alone the general flair for tailoring a map to the AI, I've seen some of the maps floating around battlenet on occasion but most ppl don't appreciate the huge maps once some fool figured out how to stack crystals in close proximity to the starbase and it's all pvp nowadays.
Direwolf wrote:

the problem would rear it's ugly head on occasion but we'd work through it, lose or restart the map and be more aggresive.

tailoring the maps to "encourage" the AI to commit forces usually fixed the issue as well, widening an entrance along with adding a bit of a "trap" generally eliminated the problem but I usually figured if we ran into the issue that it was the fault of my map and would work around it.

usually once a comp found an entrance he really wanted to crack it would go away or the 2 or 3 of us that were in the room would organise an attack with what we had to thin out the herd and get things rolling again.

the maps we were never able to beat are the ones we all whine about the most along with a few of the hunters maps I played with which were nice for their smaller size = shorter matches.

That's prolly because the replays are from an older version of the game, but it also happens when there were huge amounts of units built during the game, but this is rare. Usually it's the version incompatibility problem. Try adding the version of the game to the name when you save replays, and you could find different versions .exe files that will run the game in a given version mode, when you want to view older replays or play with older rules.

The funniest thing about some replays, is that some reps frack up because the players have too many actions. Laughing

Looks like Boxer is still good at this game, he plays for the Koreean Air Force Starcraft team, and hasn't lost a 1vs1 match untill now in Shinhan Proleague.

Return of the King

Excellent article by riptide, November 21 2008, Team Liquid.net

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=82648

I like the links to the VODs at the end of the article, there will be one for every day until Boxer's discharge on 21 of December.

Well, can't wait to see Boxer playing again for his old team, SKT T1. Very Happy
