got it from here, but the post is not complete.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetcherManager

Set the EnablePrefetcher=1
and add EnableSuperfetch = 1

see the system boot up fast.

I don't get it, I see that I have EnablePrefetcher=1, but how or where is EnableSuperfetch=1?

right click -> new -> DWORD value -> name it EnableSuperfetch -> double click it -> value data set to 1

Thats all they planned for Longhorn to make it boot faster?

I'm sure they have some other tricks up their sleeves.

So if this makes Windows XP boot up faster, why didn't Microsoft already have this value set?

Several Windows registry settings are not as "fast" as possible by default. It is most likely done like this to accommodate as many systems as possible (just taking a guess). Take MenuShowDelay for example (the time it takes for menus to appear in places like the Start Menu when the mouse is paused over them): The default setting IIRC is 500 (milliseconds). You can change this string value all the way down to zero which will make menus pop up instantly, making your whole system seem faster or more responsive. However, some systems wouldn't be able to handle popping up every menu in your Start Menu in one second as you move your mouse down the list. Besides, it's not really necessary.

If anyone wants to change their Menu pop-up speed and you don't have have a Windows app that does it for you like Tweaki, go to Registry Editor (or Run > regedit) > HKEY_CURRENT_USER (click the +) > Control Panel (click the +)> click Desktop (not the +) > double-click (or right-click > Modify) MenuShowDelay and enter a new value between 0-500 > press Enter to set value > close Registry Editor > Restart system. (The lower the value, the faster the menu response time)

edit: For those of you who are so inclined to make more changes manually in Regedit, there are also String Values that can be changed in the same area as MenuShowDelay (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop). These are;

AutoEndTasks - When this tweak is enabled it will force Windows to shutdown immediately ending all tasks without attempting to safely close any applications that have hung. Modify the value of 'AutoEndTasks' to equal '1' to automatically end tasks or '0' to prompt for action.
HungAppTimeout - This setting controls the amount of time to wait for a response from a hung application before the system task manager automatically terminates the task. Modify the value from 5000 to 1000 (1000 = 1 second).
WaitToKillAppTimeout - The default time-out before ending the task is defined by this value (default = 20000 i.e. 20 seconds). Change it to 10000.

^All these help with system shutdown speed if you want to shut your system down faster.
There are, of course, more modifications like this. They can be found online.
Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Anytime you work in the Registry you should have your system (including Registry) backed up..

Simple math realy . . 2+3=5, so you get apps, plus both, so essentially your apps recieve a 2+ bonus speed modifier. Laughing

K, I'll go back to the corner now.

There is a program from M$ that basically does the same thing for you but it is all done automatically, plus it has a few extra options like boot time counter.

Microsoft BootVis 1.3.37.0

i'd read a PC Magazine from Taiwan and it said 5 is faster than 3
however it didn't say why
5 seems not a valid value since it's a 2 bit switch so the max value is 3
humm...i don't know
Question still in my mind

i put a watch on it, from the time i hit enter at my grub bootloader, to when the desktop appeared

46s - original settings
45s - modified settings

(i counted 5 seconds to allow for moving the mouse over the user icon for each trial, test was succesive restarts)

all i could tell it did was change the when the startup apps loaded from when the windows xp screen showed up, to after you pick which user.

I used BootVis to knock about 10 secs off my bootup time, interesting to see how they actually did it ( superfetch amongst other tricks ).
