Today we are going to talk about three new graphics accelerators on Radeon HD 79xx GPUs, which have different PCBs, unique cooling systems and increased operational clock speeds. We will also test CrossFireX configurations and see how well this technology works for Tahiti graphics processors.
Let’s take a closer look at two reference graphics cards based on the junior AMD GPUs from the Southern Islands family – Cape Verde.
Will the daring newcomers based on the mainstream AMD GPUs be able to outdo the previous generation High-End graphics cards in performance, energy-efficiency and price? You bet they will! This is what we will talk about in our today’s review.
Today we are going to review a graphics accelerator with phenomenally efficient cooling system with very low noise, high performance and superb overclocking potential, which even some Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards could wish for.
We are going to talk about features, cooling, level of noise, overclocking potential and finally performance of one of the first proprietary graphics cards based on AMD’s fastest GPU. We will also check how fast a CrossFireX configuration of two Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards will turn out in our tests.
With its new Tahiti GPU architecture, highest-ever clock rates and 384-bit memory bus, how fast is the new single-processor flagship graphics card from AMD? Find out from our review!

AMD Southern Islands
Abstract
Southern Islands is a codename for the new AMD graphics adapters. AMD builds Southern Islands series graphics chips based on the 28 nm manufacturing process at TSMC. The marketing name for this series of products is Radeon HD 7000. The 28 nm product line is divided in three dies, targeted for different markets (Tahiti, Pitcairn, and Cape Verde). Southern Islands have the new architecture codenamed as "Graphics Core Next" (GCN).
