Intel Corp. will reportedly lower the prices of its i915-series of chipsets next month. Mainboard makers have already proclaimed the move to be a catalyst for migration on LGA775/PCI Express platform, according to a report over DigiTimes web-site.

Certain sources among mainboard makers are reported to have said that sales of mainboards based on i915G/i915P chipsets along with central processing units in LGA775 packaging in addition to graphics cards for PCI Express x16 platforms had been discouraging, as end-users had been reluctant to choose platforms with newer components.

Intel Corp. typically lowers pricing of its chipsets on the 28th of September. The reduction typically does not exceed $1 to $3 per chipset. In addition to pricing decline Intel Corp. is expected to introduce low-cost i910GL chipset that is supposed to drive PCI Express technologies into mainstream and low-end market segments.

One of the main reasons for lukewarm welcome of new chipsets and platforms may be high prices on DDR2 SDRAM memory. In this case modestly lower cost of chipsets may not help the new platforms to be more desired by end-users, as personal computers on their base would cost more compared to similar PCs designed using previous-generation chipsets, processors, memory and graphics cards.

Intel did not comment on the news-story.
