Nvidia Set to Release Low-Cost Single-Chip Core-Logic.

Nvidia Corp., one of the world’s leading suppliers of graphics processors, is expected to launch a new low-end chipset in late August. The core-logic will eventually substitute the current nForce 6100 and will increase pressure on entry-level chipset products from the companies like ATI Technologies, Silicon Integrated Systems and Via Technologies.

Nvidia code-named MCP61S core-logic for AMD64 microprocessors will have integrated GeForce 6/7-like graphics core, will support external PCI Express x8 graphics port in addition to two PCI Express x1 slots, D-Sub output, two Serial ATA-300 ports with RAID support, 10/100Mbps Ethernet and other functionality that combines north and south chipset bridges, reports DigiTimes web-site.

Citing mainboard makers, the web-site claimed that introduction of a single-chip MCP61S core-logic will allow motherboard manufacturers to reduce pricing of their products to about $80, while providing all the capabilities formally required for Microsoft Windows Vista premium logotype. This will increase competition on the market of low-end chipsets from ATI, Nvidia SiS and Via, who all fight for larger market share.

Large mainboard makers, including Asustek Computer, Elitegroup Compute Systems, Gigabyte Technology and MicroStar International are, according to unofficial information, intend to release motherboards powered by the new chipsets.

The Santa Clara, California-based chipset designer is also reportedly planning to release a version of MCP61S for laptops, providing further flexibility in designing of small form-factor and low-cost mobile systems.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.
