As we all know AMD only plans to start selling its first x86-64 processors for desktops only in September this year. It was said officially a number of times and it seems that we have no reasons not to believe this statement. However, today AnandTech web-site’s Brandon Hill found out that this company offers its clients to pre-order Athlon 64 processors now with delivery date in June.

A Canadian hardware retailer apparently offers its clients to pay CAD$200 (US$135) ca and wait until June 2003 to get AMD’s Athlon 64 3400+ (2.0GHz), 3600+ or 3800+ processor. Note that the information about early availability of AMD Athlon 64 processors was not confirmed by AMD. There is a very slight possibility that the Sunnyvale-based company will start selling its x86-64 CPUs for desktops in limited sometime in Summer to attract attention to the brand and also other AMD processors. Earlier Athlon 64 launch may also attract attention of computer hardware enthusiasts who plan to move to Intel Pentium 4 platform with 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus and Hyper-Threading technology support.

If the information about AMD Athlon 64’s earlier than expected time to market is correct, mainboard makers will have to ramp up the production of Socket 754 mainboards. It should not be so difficult, as even almost a year ago some mainboard makers showcased their functioning x86-64 systems, while now already numerous mobo-makers can boast with working mainboard for Athlon 64 processors.

Please consider that the information is totally unofficial and I have no confirmation from the retail store or AMD itself about possible start of the Athlon 64 sales in June.
