According to our sources, Intel is going to start using Pentium M processors in the server segment. This is very interesting news because Pentium M processors also known as Banias, were developed specifically for mobile computers. However, Pentium M design appeared very successful: these CPUs combine pretty good performance with low heat dissipation. These are exactly the qualities that are very valuable for certain server solutions. Moreover, you shouldn’t also forget that Pentium M features a very big L2 cache: 1MB for Banias and 2MB for the upcoming CPUs aka Dothan. This fact can also positively affect Pentium M performance in server tasks.

Of course, Intel will not use Pentium M in its High-End and Mainstream server solutions. Pentium M will be targeted first of all for uni-processor Ultra Dense servers. According to our information, the first servers based on Pentium M will appear within the next month already. They will be built with Pentium M 1.3GHz and LV Pentium M 1.1GHz processors in microFCPGA and microFCPGA2 packages. Due to the fact that the bus of Pentium M processors is compatible with that of Pentium 4 and Xeon, Pentium M servers will be based on Intel E7501 chipset.

Further Intel’s plans regarding Pentium M are quite unclear. However, Intel is studying very carefully the possible use of the upcoming Pentium M on Dothan core with up to 1.8GHz frequency in the servers of this type.
